  1. Spirit Walkers Series: Truth, Judgment and Eternity Galatians 5:13-25

  2. Introduction This section of Scripture, Paul labeled a warning. It has become obvious to me that the Lord is calling the universal Church to holiness. This series “Truth, Judgment and Eternity” is a series which God has been using in this church to seriously take a look at what it is to truly be saved by grace, and what the Bible clearly reveals about the judgment of believers. I believe this series will be the theme message for the rest of my life. “Truth, Judgment and Eternity” could just as well been called “Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand.”

  3. Freedom v13 For you, brethren, were [indeed] called to freedom; only [do not let your] freedom be an incentive to your flesh and an opportunity or excuse [for selfishness], but through love you should serve one another.  This freedom in Christ, is not freedom to do what we want, and still be saved. In fact, Scripture does not agree up with the “Once Saved, Always Saved” philosophy. The Freedom talked about here, is the freedom from sin, freedom from the lusts and pulls of the flesh. This freedom is only possible when we yield to the Holy Spirit.

  4. Love Others v14 For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is complied with in the one precept, You shall love your neighbor as [you do] yourself. One of the greatest fleshly sins in the Church is not loving our brothers and sisters. Jesus called hatred - murder? The Amplified here says that the secret to Human Relationships is to love others as you do yourself. If we love another with all our heart, we can’t help but be great friends with that person.

  5. Biting and Devouring v15 But if you bite and devour one another [in partisan strife], be careful that you [and your whole fellowship] are not consumed by one another. Partisan strife in this context is a militant like support of a group against another group. This is why Paul told us to be careful that if we partake in this kind of gossip and slander that a whole fellowship could be consumed. We are seeing the Universal Church engaging in Partisan Strife, “A House divided against itself will not stand.”

  6. Spirit Walkers v16 But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God). So Paul tells us to walk and live, habitually controlled by the Spirit of God. How can we as Christians filled with the Holy Spirit engage in pre-marital sex, or take drugs and grieve the Holy Spirit, or watch porn with the Holy Spirit.

  7. Flesh vs Spirit v17 For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do. Do we get that: WE ARE NOT FREE Some will say, “But we are free in Christ.” Free from sin, not free to indulge in sin. The Bible tells us that the Spirit prevents us from doing as we desire. Spirit Conscience

  8. Warning vs18-21 But if you are guided (led) by the [Holy] Spirit, you are not subject to the Law. Now the doings (practices) of the flesh are clear (obvious): they are immorality, impurity, indecency, Idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger (ill temper), selfishness, divisions (dissensions), party spirit (factions, sects with peculiar opinions, heresies), Envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. It is vitally important to understand that Paul was writing this letter to the Church of Galatia.

  9. Warning He warned born again believers of the dangers of the life styles that they were engaging in. Actually this is a repeated warning, a reminder, they could lose their salvation if they do not walk by the Spirit and give up sin. v21 I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. The Bible is filled with these kinds of lists and warnings. See Matthew 7:21-23

  10. No Law vs22-23 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge]. If we walk by the Spirit we are not under the law, but if we walk according to the flesh we are under the judgments of the law.

  11. Mis-Quote An often misquoted Scripture is Romans 8:1 “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” Said on its own, we can be deluded into thinking that now we believe in Christ we can do what we want and never be condemned. But let’s read the other half of that Scripture. “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.” An obvious inference is, if we live according to the sinful nature there is condemnation in Christ Jesus. When that Scripture is read in its entirety, we then have no trouble lining it up with the entire testimony of Scripture.

  12. Crucify the Flesh v24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites and desires. We can now tell those who belong to Christ. Those who have crucified the flesh. Those who have resisted the passions, appetites and desires of the flesh which are raging in our human bodies.

  13. Spirit Walkers v25 If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.] Here then is the secret to living the Christian life powerfully. Paul exhorts us to walk consciously with the Holy Spirit but also conscious of what the sinful nature desires. If we walk this way we can resist the sinful nature, and walk in self-control with our conduct controlled by the Spirit. We can then lead the way to Christ by example, and not only that, but we can walk in the true freedom of Christ with the Helmet of Salvation firmly bound to our head.
