  1. A. How could the problems be solved? 7 ways to solve the city problems: Slow down population increase Increase land Improve transport Protect the environment Plan the city Increase of facilities and services Increase of jobs Next

  2. Slow down population increase It can be done in 2 ways: (1) To reduce the birth rate by birth control (2) To control people moving into the city from other areas Go Back

  3. Increase land Go Back

  4. Improve transport 3 ways to ease traffic congestion: (1) To build more roads, flyovers, tunnels and bridges and a mass transit railway system e.g. In Hong Kong, the MTR and KCR provide fast and convenient ways of transporting people from one place to another (2) To increase the registration tax of private cars can help in reducing the number of cars on the roads (3) To improve the public transport services, like buses, railways and ferries so as to meet people’s needs Go Back

  5. Protect the environment  Laws should be made to stop people polluting the environment  People should use less fuel, like coal and oil since burning these fuels pollutes the air  Waste and sewage must be treated before they are discharged Go Back

  6. Plan the city  The residential, commercial areas should be zoned industrial areas and the areas for various types of landuse should be well balanced.  More land should be given to the building of recreational areas as the population increases. Go Back

  7. Increase of facilities and services  As the city develops, the facilities and services, like schools, hospitals, parks, roads, railways, power plants and reservoirs, should be increased to meet the needs of the people. Go Back

  8. Increase of jobs  The number of jobs in the city should be increased. e.g. In Hong Kong, jobs can be increased by developing high-technology and service industries. The government should also help in training workers to be skilled workers. Go Back

  9. B. Are these solutions perfect?  When we decide on a solution, we must examine the advantages and disadvantages it will bring to our city, as some of the solutions have to be done at a cost. For examples:  To build more factories  To treat factory waste and sewage before they are discharged  To reclaim the sea and level the hills Next

  10. To build more factories: ( adv.) Can provide more jobs for people ( disadv.) Waste from the factories also damages the environment Next

  11. To treat factory waste and sewage before they are discharged: ( adv.) Can protect the environment ( disadv.) The cost of production rises  More people are unemployed when factories move to other areas where the cost is lower Next

  12. To reclaim the sea and level the hills: ( adv.) Can provide more land (disadv.) It destroys the natural environment. As a result, animals and plants are killed  Reclamation reduces the size of the harbour. Hence, the harbour becomes less safe for ships as there is less space for them to move around Next

  13. C. What can we do to help improve the city environment?  To protect our city environment, every citizen should be responsible for the following things: • DO(): • - Reduce household waste, like newspapers, cans and bottles and • let them be recycled • - Reduce travelling in private cars. Use public transport more • - Use unleaded petrol • - Keep the city green by planting trees • - Save electricity. Switch off the light when nobody is using the • room • DON’T (): • - Do not use plastic bags • - Do not smoke Next

  14. Term to learn Recycle household wastes- materials from our homes which are no longer wanted are treated and turned into useful products again. For example, newspapers and books can be treated and made into paper again. END
