Importance of backflow within a plumbing system Protects against Cross connection, contaminants entering the water supply system and provides control measure against possible hazards which could be introduced into the water supply Provides zone and individual protection for water supply within identified hazard areas Allows for the quality of water within a supply network to be maintained

  3. Benefits of backflow within a plumbing system Protects the health and safety of a community and individuals who rely upon a safe supply of drinking water. Allows for a standard to be established for ways in which water safety control measures can be introduced. Allows for water outlets to be placed in high hazards areas while ensuring the water supply quality is not compromised

Role of Local Government Plumbing Inspectors in applying Backflow Prevention to plumbing installations Applying the provisions of the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2002 with regards to Backflow Prevention legislation Applying the provisions of AS/NZS 3500.1:2003 Plumbing and Drainage part 1: Water Services with regards to Backflow Prevention requirements and Accessing Alterative solutions under the requirements of the Plumbing Code of Australia. Ensuring Backflow installations protect water networks and private water supplies Identification of hazard types and when backflow shall be applied

Role of Local Government Plumbing Inspectors in applying Backflow Prevention to plumbing installations Alterative Solutions and Risk Assessments Local Governments have experienced a significant increase in the amount of Alterative Solution submissions relating to the proposed reduction of the hazard rating of an appliance / product Alterative Solution submissions proposing a reduction in a hazard rating must have a risk assessment included in the document, this is to demonstrate how the hazard reduction rating was achieved. Risk Assessments shall comply with the requirements of Australian Standard “SAA MP78 - 1999”
