What is Development? • Development is the process of soliciting and gathering contributions as money or other resources, by requesting donations from individuals, businesses, charitable foundations, or governmental agencies. • Development includes: • Annual Appeal Program • Major Gift Program • Special Events • Social Media Strategy

Why do Individuals Financially Support Organizations? • People give for a variety of non-mutually-exclusive reasons, including: • Altruism • Guilt • A calling to do so (moral and/or theological) • Peer pressure • A desire to effect change • An interest in improving their own social standing • A desire to “pay back” • Habit/tradition • Alignment with particular institutions’ missions • Personal acquaintance with one or more people involved with the institution • It makes them happy • Tax considerations

Who does Development? • EVERYONE! • 100% of all Board Members are expected to advance the mission of the school. • How? • Champion the school’s Development program • Serve as the “action arm” of the Development program • Build a bridge between school and community • Help develop influential friends for the school • Take a leadership role in efforts to obtain financial support for the school • Play an active role in attracting new families to the school

  9. The Development Committee • Works with the Principal, Pastor and School Board Members to move board-approved initiatives forward. • Serves as the “Muscles” behind: • The Annual Appeal Program • The Major Gift/Cultivation Program • Special Events • Marketing/Social Media

  10. Development Definitions • Annual Fund • Definition: An organized effort to obtain gifts on a yearly basis to support, at least in part, general operations of a school. Funds are typically raised through mail, email or direct solicitation efforts such as phone-a-thons and special events. • Major Gifts • Definition: Any significant donation, from an individual to a charitable or voluntary organization. The dollar amount to qualify as a Major Gift varies from institution to institution and can range from $1,000 to $1,000,000+. • Special Events • Definition: Any planned activity that is outside the scope of regular daily fundraising activities of your school. The goal of fundraising events is to reconnect with past donors, engage new donors and to tell your story.

  11. Development Definitions • Planned Giving • Definition: Any gift for any amount given for any purpose - operations, capital expansion, or endowment - whether for current or deferred use. Planned gifts will require the assistance of a professional staff person, qualified volunteer or the donor's advisors to complete the gift. These gifts can take the form of bequests, life insurance, charitable trusts, or other financial or legal instruments. • Social Media • Definition: A web based media designed to disseminate through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media supports the human need for social interaction with technology.
