  5. Conception & Pregnancy • Fertilization- Also called conception. • It is the union of the egg from mother & sperm from father • ZYGOTE • United egg & sperm • Divided & makes dozens of cells

  6. Conception & Pregnancy • BLASTOCYST • Hollow sphere, made up of hundreds of cells • After 4-5 days • Implants into wall of Uterus

  8. Conception & Pregnancy • FETUS • After 2nd month of pregnancy (1.2 inches) • Starts to take on human characteristics • Hair, facial features, ears, move & kick, • Muscles & sense organs develop * 26 weeks (survival)

  9. 1st Trimester • Excited & happy • Morning Sickness • Very tired • Moodiness

  10. 2nd Trimester • Probably the best • Fetus begins moving • Fluid released from nipples • Less tired • Continuing to get bigger

  11. 3rd Trimester • WHEN IS THIS BABY COMING?? • Maximum weight • Contractions- real & fake (Braxton Hicks) • Back to tired • Very uncomfortable

  12. Sympathetic Pregnancy • Fathers experience • Weight gain • Tired • Morning sickness • Etc. • DADS HAVE PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS TOO:Q: My wife is pregnant and I've started putting on weight too! I've also been having nose bleeds and headaches. What's wrong with me?

  13. Prenatal Care • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome • Amniocentesis- older test to detect abnormalities • Chorionic Villus Sampling- newer test, chorion from the placenta is removed • Ultrasound- picture of fetus

  14. Birth • Stages • Labor- contractions begin (lasts awhile) • Delivery- ½ hour to 2 hours…actual birth of baby • Afterbirth- 3rd stage, consists of delivery of the placenta (15-30 minutes)

  15. APGAR SCORE • Take 2X’s…immediately after birth and roughly 5 minutes later. Score of 0-10 • Heartrate • Breathing • Muscle Tone • Reaction to Stimulus • Skin color

  16. Complications • Ectopic pregnancy- implantation occurs in the fallopian tube • Miscarriage- Expulsion of dead zygote, blastocyst, embryo, or fetus • Stillbirth- birth of a dead full-term fetus • Toxemia- HBP, protein in urine, swelling • Rh Factor- Mother and Fetus’s blood protein differ

  17. Problems at birth • Cesarean section- surgical method of birth • Premature birth • Umbilical cord • Heart rate • Oxygen

  18. Multiple births • Identical twins- develop from the same egg • Fraternal twins- Develop from 2 eggs
