  1. Proverbs 18

  2. 18

  3. Separating Our selves from others • (Prov 18:1 NKJV) A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment. (Prov 18:1 NCV) Unfriendly people are selfish and hate all good sense. • How are these verses related? If we become unfriendly, we will isolate ourselves from others.

  4. Talk is Cheap • Some people have a comment to make on virtually every subject. They never say, “I don’t know,” or just listen in order to learn something. They just spout off their uninformed opinions to any willing listener. Proverbs calls such persons fools (Prov. 18:2) • The Word in Life Study Bible

  5. Fools will not listen & Learn • (Prov 18:2 NKJV) A fool has no delight in understanding, But in expressing his own heart. • (Prov 18:2 NCV) Fools do not want to understand anything. They only want to tell others what they think.

  6. Is this “Politically Correct”? • (Prov 18:3 NKJV) When the wicked comes, contempt comes also; And with dishonor comes reproach. • (Prov 18:3 NCV) Do something evil, and people won't like you.Do something shameful, and they will make fun of you.

  7. Words should have meaning. • (Prov 18:4 NKJV) The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook. • (Prov 18:4 NCV) Spoken words can be like deep water, but wisdom is like a flowing stream. • (This translation is missing wellspring.)

  8. The great aorta • This is the more likely to be the true reading, because the figure of the heart propelling the blood through the great aorta, to send it to all parts of the animal system, is a favourite with Solomon, as it was with his father, David. See the note on Psa_36:9; Pro_10:11, etc. -- Adam Clarke

  9. Do We See this happening? • (Prov 18:5 NKJV) It is not good to show partiality to the wicked,Or to overthrow the righteous in judgment. • (Prov 18:5 NCV) It is not good to honor the wicked or to be unfair to the innocent.

  10. Foolish words can cause fights. • (Prov 18:6 NKJV) A fool's lips enter into contention, And his mouth calls for blows. • (Prov 18:6 NIV) A fool's lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating.

  11. Albert Barnes Comments • Pro 18:6-8 • The first verse speaks of the immediate, the others of the remote, results of the “fool’s” temper. First, “contention,” then “strokes” or blows, then “destruction,” and last, “wounds.”

  12. Watch your words! • (Prov 18:7 NKJV) A fool's mouth is his destruction,And his lips are the snare of his soul. • (Prov 18:7 NCV) The words of fools will ruin them;their own words will trap them.

  13. Two sides of the same coin? • (Prov 18:8 KJV) The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. • (Prov 18:8 TLB) What dainty morsels rumors are. They are eaten with great relish!

  14. Words can do great damage • (Prov 18:8 KJV) The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. • wounds, • H3859 • להם lâham • law-ham' • A primitive root; properly to burn in, that is, (figuratively) to rankle: - wound.

  15. Lazy/slack – pretty serious • (Prov 18:9 NASB) He also who is slack in his work Is brother to him who destroys. • (Prov 18:9 TLB) A lazy man is brother to the saboteur. • (Prov 18:9 NCV) A person who doesn't work hard is just like someone who destroys things.

  16. The name of the LORD • (Prov 18:10 NASB) The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe. • (Prov 18:10 NCV) The LORD is like a strong tower; those who do right can run to him for safety.

  17. The Lord is a strong tower • Pro 18:10 • “The name of the Lord is a strong tower” - The name of the Lord may be taken for the Lord himself;he is a strong tower, a refuge, and place of complete safety, to all that trust in him. What a strong fortress is to the besieged, the like is God to his persecuted, tempted, afflicted followers. -- Adam Clarke

  18. The name of the Lord • The name of the Lord is so important, so powerful, and so much to be respected and revered. For wonder He says, • (Exo 20:7 NKJV) "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

  19. Trust in riches • (Prov 18:11 NASB) A rich man's wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own imagination. • (Prov 18:11 TLB) The rich man thinks of his wealth as an impregnable defense, a high wall of safety. What a dreamer!

  20. Do these say the same thing? • (Prov 18:12 NKJV) Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility. • (Prov 18:12 TLB) Pride ends in destruction; humility ends in honor.

  21. Don’t jump to judgment • (Prov 18:13 NASB) He who gives an answer before he hears, It is folly and shame to him. • (Prov 18:13 TLB) What a shame--yes, how stupid!--to decide before knowing the facts! • (Prov 18:13 NCV) Anyone who answers without listening is foolish and confused.

  22. The Importance of Attitude! • (Prov 18:14 NKJV) The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, But who can bear a broken spirit? • (Prov 18:14 NCV) The will to live can get you through sickness, but no one can live with a broken spirit.

  23. The Wise keeps learning • (Prov 18:15 NASB) The mind of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. • (Prov 18:15 NCV) The mind of a person with understanding gets knowledge;the wise person listens to learn more.

  24. “Gifts” can make a difference • (Prov 18:16 NKJV) A man's gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men. • (Prov 18:16 NCV) Taking a gift to an important man will help get you in to see him.

  25. Get all the facts first! • (Prov 18:17 NKJV) The first one to plead his cause seems right, Until his neighbor comes and examines him. • (Prov 18:17 NCV) The person who tells one side of a story seems right, until someone else comes and asks questions.

  26. Casting lots to settle arguments • (Prov 18:18 NKJV) Casting lots causes contentions to cease, And keeps the mighty apart. • (Prov 18:18 NCV) Throwing lots can settle arguments and keep the two sides from fighting.

  27. The Problem of Arguments • (Prov 18:19 NKJV) A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a castle. • (Prov 18:19 NCV) A brother who has been insulted is harder to win back than a walled city, and arguments separate people like the barred gates of a palace.

  28. Our Speech can be rewarding • (Prov 18:20 NKJV) A man's stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth, From the produce of his lips he shall be filled. • (Prov 18:20 NCV) People will be rewarded for what they say; they will be rewarded by how they speak.

  29. Words can mean life or death. • (Prov 18:21 NKJV) Death and life are in the power of the tongue,And those who love it will eat its fruit. • (Prov 18:21 NCV) What you say can mean life or death. Those who speak with care will be rewarded.

  30. A Good Wife! • (Prov 18:22 NKJV) He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the LORD. • (Prov 18:22 NCV) When a man finds a wife, he finds something good. It shows that the LORD is pleased with him.

  31. How We Answer • (Prov 18:23 NKJV) The poor man uses entreaties, But the rich answers roughly. • (Prov 18:23 TLB) The poor man pleads, and the rich man answers with insults.

  32. Different Friends • (Prov 18:24 NKJV) A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. • (Prov 18:24 TLB) There are "friends" who pretend to be friends, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
