2. Diseases • The main cause of disease was mostly from lack of hygiene. • Typhoid was a disease that was spread from improper sanitation. • “Black Death” was a disease carried by rats and was one of the biggest killers. • In 1563 20,00 people died from the “Black Death”.

3. The “Black Death” was also known as the Bubonic plague. It was carried by fleas and transmitted from rats. • The symptoms of “Black Death” were headaches, nausea, aching, fever of 101-105, and vomiting.

4. Other common diseases Malaria was spread by mosquitoes Smallpox. Scurvy was from not eating right.

5. Cures • Herbs were used to cure diseases. • Sweet smelling herbs were used to treat head aches. • Stomach aches were treated with wormwood, mint, and balm. • Pneumonia and Bronchitis were treated by liquoriceand comfrey, and they are also used in Bronchitis medicine today.

6. Elizabethan Doctors Elizabethan Doctors were covered head to foot, even wearing masks to prevent getting sick. The Doctors wore long dark robes with pointed hoods, leather gloves, boots, and masks that looked like a birds beak which were filled with bergamot oil. Amulets of dried blood and ground-up toads were worn at the waist. It was their custom to douse themselves with vinegar and chew angelica before approaching the patient.
