  1. Proposal for a cleaner bridlewood

  2. Summary • The amount of trash littering the ground in Bridlewood public areas, streets, boulevards and parks is increasing to the point where it is unsightly and unacceptable to many who live here and have invested in property in this area. Factors affecting the increase may include: • 1) Increasing density of population • 2) The addition of fast food and convenience stores to the community • 3) Scarcity of trash bins in heavily travelled pedestrian thoroughfares • 4) No recent ongoing emphasis or incentives to keep the community clean

  3. While the “Cleaning the Capital” campaigns, carried out by dedicated volunteers in the spring and fall, do an exemplary job of cleaning up twice a year, the sad reality is that in between these efforts, the trash accumulates again beginning as soon as the job is done. This proposal seeks to find ways to set a more acceptable standard in the community year round.

  4. Proposal • This proposal recommends a four-pronged response to trash on the ground: • I. Create and Develop a Group of Volunteers who will ‘adopt’ a street or small area near their homes to clean up on a regular basis. • 2. Educate Kids and Provide Opportunities to Participate in Clean up Efforts through Schools and Sports Teams. • Identify Locations and Negotiate for More Trash Bins in Heavily Used Areas. • Program Promotion

  5. 1. Create and develop a group of volunteers • • Would probably be mainly seniors or retirees, but could include families with children as well. There are a number of residents already doing this on their own. • • Little structure needs be given to how often or when clean up is done; this is strictly a volunteer activity, and the objective is improvement, not perfection. • • Volunteers could be provided with ‘litter pickers’, gloves, trash bags and possibly bibs or armbands with a Bridlewood logo to identify their function

  6. 1. Create and develop a group of volunteers • • Volunteers should have some opportunity to meet for social functions, for information, affirmation and encouragement. • • Volunteers could make occasional “surprise’ visits to parks and playgrounds with treats and drinks for kids who will help clean up an area. This could develop awareness of the trash issue and provide positive consequences for picking it up. • • A name would be chosen to identify this group such as “Bridlewood Clean Sweep Coalition” (or something more creative!)

  7. 2. Educate and involve our young people • • Information about the anti-trash project can be conveyed to parents through BCA newsletters distributed through schools over the winter and early spring months. • • Schools can be invited to participate and educate by having the children do clean up on and around school property during the spring months. They can be asked to encourage children to do this at home and on a regular basis. Perhaps BCA could provide incentives. • • Information and possibly stickers with a logo could be distributed in bags handed out to community sports teams. Teams could be encouraged to clean up the park before leaving the area. Again, BCA could provide incentives.

  8. 3. Identify locations for new trash bins • • Currently the City of Ottawa advises that all available permanent trash bins are deployed. In the event that new programs become available to replace the current bins (apparently a work in progress) we could continue to request that more bins be placed in heavily littered areas. This would particularly include thoroughfares which do not feature home frontages, and common areas where people gather. • • Requests could be made to Ottawa Transpo for bins to be placed at bus stops if we had evidence of significant littering in specific locations.

  9. 4. promotion • •Develop a catchy program name and logo to be used in BCA website, newsletters, incentives and possibly signage. • •Procure vests or armbands to make the volunteers visible and to let people know what they are doing. • • Set up an online registration form where volunteers can document what they have done. Use this information for regular draws for prizes or other incentives. • • Plan a reception for all participants to thank them for their efforts and to provide an opportunity for Social Interaction.

  10. Next Steps • Form a volunteer committee to work on developing the program. • Name the program and design a logo • Develop a webpage for the program and promote by email, newspaper articles, school newsletters, etc. • Recruit volunteers and supply them with garbage pickers, gloves and trash bags. • Plan a Thank You Event

  11. Want to be involved? • After a great discussion at our April 15 BCA General Meeting, a committee was formed to work on developing the program and recruiting volunteers. • Join our planning committee or find our more information by contacting Margaret at pres@bridlewood.ca
