  1. Transcendentalism / Romanticism Journals Mrs. Shaver

  2. Journal- “One Sweet World” Nine planets round the sun Only one does the sun embrace Upon this watered one So much we take for granted So let us sleep outside tonight Lay down in our mother's arms For here we can rest safely If green should slip to grey But our hearts still bloody be And if mountains crumble away And the river dry Would it stop the stepping feet Take all that we can get When it's done Nobody left to bury here Nobody left to dig the holes And here we can rest safely One sweet world Around a star is spinning One sweet world And in her breath I'm swimming And here we will rest in peace Read the lyrics to the right, and I will play the song. What do you think the song is about? What words tell you that? Are there poetic devices in the song?

  3. “Wake Me Up” Journal Feeling my way through the darkness Guided by a beating heart I can't tell where the journey will end But I know where to start They tell me I'm too young to understand They say I'm caught up in a dream Well life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes Well that's fine by me So wake me up when it's all over When I'm wiser and I'm older All this time I was finding myself, and I Didn't know I was lost (repeat) I tried carrying the weight of the world But I only have two hands Hope I get the chance to travel the world But I don't have any plans Wish that I could stay forever this young Not afraid to close my eyes Life's a game made for everyone And love is a prize Take a few minutes to listen to the song “Wake Me Up” and respond to the lyrics. What is the songwriter trying to say? Use textual evidence from the song for support. Identify any transcendentalist philosophies mentioned in the song.

  4. Journal- Social Experiment After our little “social experiment” (The Cupid Shuffle), did anyone behave in a way that violated one of the Transcendentalist Philosophies? Was there anyone who lived up to the teachings of the Transcendentalists? Tell specific examples. A few of the Philosophies: Nonconformity, Self-reliance, Free Thought, Confidence

  5. Journal: Romanticism Intro When you hear the word “romance”, what comes to your mind? What images or words do you associate with it? As we begin our Romanticism Unit, what types of stories do you think we will encounter? (1 paragraph)

  6. Journal After reading the poems by Longfellow, what message do you think he is trying to portray? What are some abstract concepts you found? Cite 1-2 lines of textual evidence for support. How do you think this poem could be applied to your own life? (1 paragraph minimum)

  7. Day 47 “The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls” Watch the video clip (above). In a paragraph, give three words to describe the mood of the scene. How could this scene be a symbol? Explain an abstract concept this could represent. Remember to think critically.
