RingLasers and G-Pisa (A. Di Virgilio – INFN Pisa)

Ringlasers are high-sensitivity inertial sensors that can measure angular speed. G-Pisa is a ringlaser with a sensitivity close to the shot noise limit, making it suitable for applications like the control of an Inverted Pendulum in AdVirgo. The current limitations include temperature fluctuations causing mode jumps, which are being addressed through active control. Aging issues with the gas mixture have also been resolved.

  1. RingLasers and G-Pisa(A. Di Virgilio – INFN Pisa) Ringlasers are inertial sensors sensitive to angular speed Sensitivity in the range of 10-12 rad/s/sqrt(Hz) has been obtained so far with rings with area around 20 m2 This sensitivity is very close to the shot noise limit G-Pisa is a high sensitivity ringlaser, with side scalable between 0.9-2 m

  2. The shot noise of a gyrolaser depends on mirror quality and size of the square ring

  3. At low frequency G-Pisa response depends on the environmental noise, the best power spectrum has been measured during the night (red curve) the two parallel lines are the requirements given for the tilt control of the Inverted Pendulum in AdVirgo, the dotted line is G-Pisa shot noise

  4. Conclusions The sensitivity of ringlasers is improving, now they run very close to the shot noise limit G-Pisa has shown that its sensitivity is good enough to fulfill the AdV requirements for the Inverted Pendulum control Presently, G-Pisa is limited by temperature fluctiations causing mode jumps (10-20 minutes of continuus run) To avoid mode jumps problem, the implementation of a perimeter active control is in progress Aging of the elio-neon gas mixture has been solved, a refilling after 4-5 weeks is no longer necessary
