  2. Lesson # Five Preaching Jesus As Lord And Christ “THE LAST WILL and TESTAMENT of JESUS CHRIST” OPEN FORUM!

Do You Have a Written Will in the Event of Your Death? • Too Many People Wait Until They Are Much Older to Write a Will. • The Practice of Writing a Will is Common in Our Society. • Leaving a Will is Not a Modern Development, but an Ancient Practice. • In Tonight’s Study We want to Focus Our Attention On The Last Will and Testament of Jesus! • ONE THAT IS SOME 2000 YEARS OLD and HAD IT’S ORIGIN FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.

THE DEFINITION OF A WILL Hebrews 9:15-17 (KJV) 15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. 16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

  5. “Testament” / “Covenant” (from dioatheke) (Hebrews 9:15): • “The last disposition which one makes of his earthly possessions after his death, a testament or will.”-- Thayer’s Greek Lexicon

  6. A WILL MAKER….. • For every will (testament) there must be a “testator”who made the will. (Hebrews 9:16). • A will (or testament) cannot be written unless the person has a “legacy”(i.e., money or property to pass on to others).

  7. Jesus Has a Wonderful Legacy to Pass on to Others! • The Legacy of Forgiveness of Sins (Luke 24:46-47; Acts 2:38; 3:19; Heb. 8:12). -- There is Nothing on Earth More Important Than Having Your Sins Forgiven Which Stand Between You and Your Maker! (Isaiah 59:1-2; 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9).

  8. The Legacy of Eternal Life. -- Linked to forgiveness is the promise of eternal life in Heaven with God (Hebrews 10:19-23; 1 John 2:25). -- Not all the riches of the earth could begin to compare with the eternal riches that the Lord Jesus gives us! (Ephesians 1:3).--

  9. Jesus’ Will (Testament) Went Into Effect at the Moment of His Death. • In every will, the testator must die(or blood must be shed) for the will to go into effect (Heb. 9:16-17). • When Jesus died upon the cross, a “New Testament” (or new will) went into effect (Col. 2:13-17).

  10. NO TWO WILLS CAN CO-EXIST • The New Testament (will) replaced the Old Testament (will) with all of its laws and regulations (as prophesied - Jer. 31:33-34 cf. (Heb. 8:10-13; 10:9). • To follow the Old Will (testament) in addition to the New Will (Testament) will cause a person to be “cut out of the will” (Gal. 5:1-4).

  11. The Conditions of the Will. • In every will, there are conditions that must be met in order for people to inherit the person’s legacy. • Example: A father will give his ranch to his son provided he lives in Texas. • Rev 21:7 (NKJV) “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.” Cf. Revelation 22:14

  12. Revelation 22:14 (NKJV) “Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.”

  13. The Conditions of the Will. • The testator (author of the will) has the absolute right to make whatever conditions he wants to make (Matthew 28:18-20). • The Lord Jesus passes on His legacy to only those people who are God’s children (Rom. 8:16-17). • To be one of His children, each person must be adopted into the Lord’s family or “born again” spiritually (Gal. 4:4-7; John 3:3-5)

  14. How May a Person Be Adopted Into God’s Family and Thus Become an Heir of Christ? • By the grace of God found in Jesus Christ our Savior, a person may become an heir of Christ (Titus 3:5-7).

  15. Titus 3:5-7 (NKJV) “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

  16. BUT…. CONDITIONS TO BE MET • To gain access to His grace, each person must… • BELIEVEin Christ (Mark 16:16) • CONFESShis/ her faith in Him (Rom. 10:9-10) • REPENTof his sins (Acts 2:38) • Be BAPTIZED into Christ (Acts 2:38) ALL MUST BE JUST as IS specified by JESUS CHRIST in His will (i.e., the New Testament)

  17. TO BE PARTAKERS …… • Only those who are baptized into Christ are children of God (Gal. 3:26-29) and thus heirs of eternal life. • To remain an heir of Christ after baptism, a person must maintain an obedient faith unto the Lord to the very end (Heb. 6:11-12).

  18. Hebrews 6:11-12 (NASB) “And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”
