  1. First Grade March News Welcome to March! We are so excited about this month and all it has in store for us. We are almost to the 4th quarter and last part of 1st grade so please keep working hard! We are very proud of how our students are growing! Thank you for your help in completing weekly homework each week, studying spelling words and reading everyday! What’s Going on in 1st Grade? This month is a busy one! We will be completing our learning of the 3rd quarter priority and content standards . This month will bring us lots of learning about things that happen in the month of March especially the beginning of spring and change in the weather! During the month of March we will be learning about r-controlled vowels in our phonics study. This is where we will learn about the different sounds that are formed when we have a r and a vowel beside each other in words. We will be doing some reader’s theater, which gives us a great experience in building fluency and having fun while doing it! Each week when your child reads the fluency passages throughout the week this gives them a great way to work on re-reading the same passage to help them build up their prosody when reading. This should also build students confidence up when by the end of the week they can read the passage on their own with very little mistakes! Way to go! Throughout the next month we will be fine tuning our reading skills. We are making sure we follow rules we have learned in phonics, practice sight words and make sure we include lots of details from the story when we retell and answer questions about it orally and in written form. This month we will be working on writing essays where we gather research! This is such an exciting unit to learn! We will be exploring ways to gather information by using different types of media and learning how to take information we gather and put into a factual writing piece. This month in math we will be working with learning about how to collect data and using different ways to display data collected such as line plots and bar graphs. We will also begin working on measuring length in non-standard units and learning about geometric shapes. $ Friday Dollar Days $ Each Friday in March will be a day for students to help raise money for Relay for Life. Be on the lookout for flyers that are coming home each week to see if your child would like to participate! We appreciate all the encouragement and support. Everyone has been effected in some way by this disease, thanks for your support! Second and third grade students from all around Wilkes County will be attending a field trip to the John A. Walker Center on March 25th! These are always so great and a wonderful experience for all students to get to have with their classmates! This month in reading we are encouraging our students to work on writing down the answers to questions they have from the text. This will help students on their end of year reading assessments and build writing skills as well.
