Project Started 12/12/01 Announced in San Francisco, CA, October 1, 2002 IBM and SeniorNet today announced the nationwide launch of a new innovative technology that will make the Web more accessible by allowing users to reformat Web pages according to their individual user preferences. This technology allows users to improve their Web experience by enhancing the readability of Web pages, making the browser easier to use, reading text out loud, and even making the keyboard easier to use. The initiative represents the next step in SeniorNet and IBM's multi-year partnership to make the Web accessible to more and more people.

Major Software Features • Have the computer "speak" the text on a Web page. • Magnify everything on the page by as much as 250%. • Enlarge the size of menus and scroll bars on the browser. • Use the keyboard instead of a mouse to move the cursor on the screen. • Change the color of text and backgrounds to improve readability. • See text in huge, one-inch high, letters in a banner above the page. • Turn images and animations off to reduce the clutter and confusion of many Web pages.

  6. Let’s Get Started! • Double Click the Web Adaptation Startup Icon on your desktop … the login window will open

  7. Logging In • For username, enter “stux” where x is your workstation number • For password, enter “stationx” using the same number for xas above • Click the Login button … your browser will open to the usual home page

  8. Playing with the Settings Click the Settings button on the browser tool bar The Settings window will open. Click the X to close it.

  9. Click the ? to open the Help Text

Getting the software at home • Sign Up for a Userid and Password • Download the software • Web Adaptation Software (required) • ViaVoice (optional) • Install the software (both if applicable) • Start the Web Adaptation Software like we did here IBM Web Settings Workshop Software Download and Installation Instructions The following pages describe how to register to use the Web Adaptation software at home. Once you are registered, you can follow the instructions on the following pages to download and install the IBM Web Adaptation and IBM ViaVoice software that was used in the workshop.
