Mark 1:16-20 • As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him

  5. Mark 1:16-20 • CIT – The calling of the first disciples and how they responded to Jesus call. • MOT – To show what it means and what it will take to be a follower of Jesus • MOS – To help people understand what it means to respond to the “calling” of Jesus to be his followers

  6. Historical Context – • Peter was no ordinary working man. He and his partners owned fishing craft and the means to carry on profitable business. Peter and his brother Andrew shared their fishing business with the brothers, James and John, sons of Zebedee (Luke 5:7, 10) • Peter’s brother, Andrew, was a disciple of John the Baptist and was given to enlisting other disciples, so it was inevitable that Peter would be brought to Jesus (John 1:35-42) • The Gospel of John reports that Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist before he joined Jesus. John also reports that Peter was introduced to Jesus by his brother Andrew who had already recognized Jesus as the Messiah.

Literal Context • Verse 16-19 is an abbreviated version of Peter’s meeting with Jesus (same with Matthew 4:18-20 and Luke 5:1-11- Synoptic Gospels). • Gospel of Mark – Shorter and more action packed. Mark directs his book toward a Roman audience because he pictures Jesus as a man of action, showing what Jesus did to get the attention of his roman audience. • Mark was very direct in his description of this account because his intended audience (Romans). The style of his writing was very direct and concise.

If you know, you will follow – • As we see, it was not the first encounter of Simon Peter and Andrew with Jesus (John 1:35-42) • John the Baptist gave his testimony concerning Jesus with his disciples, one of them being Andrew (V41), who in turn introduced Peter to Jesus. • The second is presumably the author himself (NIVBC) • That is why when Jesus called them to follow him as in the beginning of his Ministry there was an immediate response from Peter and Andrew. They knew about him already. This was not their first meeting with Jesus. • For James and John, they witnessed a miracle by Jesus (Luke 5:1-11) • They knew he was the messiah because of Peter’s testimony and the miracle they saw.

  9. 1. If you know, you will follow – • It is hard to follow somebody whom you do not personally know… • Q. How much do you know about Jesus that you will be willing to follow his footsteps? • Q. How much do you know about Jesus that you are willing to sacrifice everything just to follow him? (Peter and Andrew left their fishing boats same with James and John cf. Luke 5:1-11. They were no ordinary workmen. They owned a fishing boat. They have means for profitable business)

If you follow, you will be transformed • Jesus is the one who transforms people and eventually makes them “Fishers of Men” • The Key to transformation is “to follow”… • What does it mean by to follow Jesus? • To submit to his authority • To live and be like him – • Obedient to God – “Not my will but your will be done”. Mt 26:42 • Holy – “Be holy, because I am holy”. I Pt 1:16 • Humble – “Took the very nature of a servant”. Ph 2:5-8

  11. 2. If you follow, you will be transformed • How do we follow Jesus today? He is not physically present? • Obedience to His words (The Bible…) • This is when transformation comes… • Transformed lives (Salt and light…) which leads people in to the fellowship • Thus you live out the life of a “fisher of men”… • Humility to submit to his will… • This was His example – “Not my will but your will be done”

Challenge: • For our friends: • Get to know more about Jesus by studying the Bible. • When you get to know Him, his life, his love and his calling for you, it will help you decide to follow his steps. • For the disciples: • Get to know him deeper. • Life changing Quiet Times. Spend more time studying His words. • Allow his words to transform you. • Obedience leads to holiness… • Practical: • Invest in Spiritual books, Study Bible, Bible Dictionary, etc. • Be involved in a discipling relationship
