  3. Preindustrial Cities • In Ancient Roman Society, there was an estimate that the population of Rome was 650,000 • With its decline, there occurred a rustication movement (moving to rural areas) • Those who lived in cities lived in walled cities to protect themselves

  4. Preindustrial Cities • Characterized: • Sense of community (Gemeinschaft) • Overcrowded • Basis: kin and land • High degree of social integration • Near lakes, rivers or by the sea

  5. Industrial Cities • Characterized: • Lack of a sense of community (Gesellschaft) • Growth of factories • Emergent technology • High growth rate in industrializing Europe • Types: metropolis: one or more central cities and their surrounding suburbs that dominate the economic and cultural life of a region • Central City: the densely populated centre of a metropolis

  7. Postindustrial Cities • Characterized: • Decline of factories and industrial sectors • High tech and service industries (tertiary) • Business and government • Transportation centres • High levels of communication
