  4. Questions of the day • What is your experience in environmental control systems? • What would you like to learn about in this course? Submit to discussion on Canvas.

  5. Course Goals 1. Enhance student visual literacy in the built environment. 2. Learn to use the built environment as a living learning laboratory. 3. Learn to use architectural form as an environmental control system. 4. Develop the design and communication skills needed to interact with other disciplines.

  6. Textbooks & Other Readings • Lechner, Norbert. Heating, Cooling, Lighting: Sustainable Design Methods for Architects, 3rd Ed., New York: John Wiley & Sons, 2009. • Reserved at the Marriott Library. • Website (http://faculty.arch.utah.edu/young/TEACHING/ARCH4350F14/A4350F14menu.htm) • Canvas

  7. Grading • Leadership & Participation 100 points • Environmental Stewardship 100 points • Vernacular Response 100 points • Solar Sculputre 100 points • Exams (3@ 100 pts. each) 300 points Total 700 points

  8. Grading Cut Off Percentage A: 93 C: 73 A-: 90 C-: 70 B+: 87 D+: 67 B: 83 D: 63 B-: 80 D-: 60 C+: 77 E: <60

  12. "The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." — Marcel Proust

  13. Architectural Form as an Environmental Control System Analyzing and designing for the architectural opportunities and constraints afforded by: • Passive Systems • Mechanical & Electrical Systems • Architectural Acoustics • Utilities Design is: Informed and shaped by the natural elemental forces: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water Shaped by imposed constraints Shaped by the physics of sound Shaped by local building and life safety code requirements
