  1. Vocabulary Vocabulary can be defined, roughly, as the words that we teach in the foreign language.

  2. Objectives • To become more aware of approaches to vocabulary teaching. • To learn different vocabulary presentation techniques. • To be able to choose appropriate techniques for presenting and testing vocabulary.

  3. What Needs to be Taught

  4. Theory Comprehension of vocabulary relies on strategies that permit one to understand words and store them, to _commit_ them to memory, while production concerns _ strategies_ that activate one’s storage by retrieving __these_ words from memory, and by using _them_ in appropriate situations. A growing number __of_ researchers and teachers believe that comprehension __should_ precede production in language teaching. The _objective_ of a vocabulary lesson is the _enhancing_ of the different strategies for comprehension _and_ production.

  5. Research Shows… • 1. You will get better results if the words you teach have clear, easily comprehensible meanings. • 2. You will get better results if items can be linked with each other, or with ones already known, through meaning-or sound-association. • 3. It is better to teach vocabulary in separated, spaced sessions that to teach it all at once. In other words, words will be learned better if, for example, they are taught briefly at the beginning of a lesson, reviewed later in the same lesson, and again in the next one than if the same total amount of time is used for learning the words all at once. This needs careful lesson-planning, but will repay the effort.
