Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • INTRODUCTION • The DOT Library was established in 1969 by consolidating the three Washington libraries of the Federal Highway and Federal Aviation Administrations and of the US Coast Guard. • The library’s Mission is to support the department by providing DOT employees information needed to accomplish their daily work and special assignments. • Vision Statement: “The DOT Library is the Information Gateway for the Transportation Community”. June, 2003

Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • GENERAL INFORMATION • The Library collects materials in electronic and print formats and our collections of over 300,000 items provide comprehensive coverage of all modes of transportation, with an emphasis on surface transport. • The DOT Library is preparing today for the information needs of tomorrow and continues to provide customers with a wide array of electronic information accessible at their desktops. Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • GENERAL INFORMATION • Collections Main Library (Room 2200, Nassif Building) • Includes technical and legal materials on: General transportation; surface transportation; water transportation. • The collection also includes such specialized topics as: Bridges; engineering, with an emphasis on civil and marine engineering; highways and highway safety; mass transit; oceanography; traffic engineering; surveys and forecasts; urban transportation. June, 2003

Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • GENERAL INFORMATION • Collections Coast Guard Law Library (Room B726, Transpoint Building) • Includes a legal collection of about 35,000 volumes and covers: General legal; maritime law. • The collection also includes such specialized topics as: International maritime; US Coast Guard Commandant Instructions; US Treasury Decisions from 1868; maritime thesis collection.   6. Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • GENERAL INFORMATION • Policies • Who may use the libraryThe library is open to DOT employees, contractors, and to the public. Non-DOT library visitors will be asked to show a valid picture ID to enter any of the library locations and are encouraged to call ahead. • BorrowingDOT employees of the Washington HQ region may check-out circulating library materials. Non-DOT patrons wishing to borrow materials can contact their local library to arrange for a possible inter-library loan. • PhotocopyingPhotocopy services are available at all library locations. Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • PUBLIC SERVICES • Services for the Public The public will be asked to show a valid picture ID to enter any of the library locations and are encouraged to call ahead. The public has access to all library materials, including reference sources, to be used in the library only.  Borrowing privileges can be arranged for members of the general public via inter-library loan. Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • PUBLIC SERVICES • Services for the Publichttp://dotlibrary.dot.gov/srvcspub.htm Online Digital Special Collections • Important historic document collections which the Library has digitized in order to broaden access. • Included in the collection are: CAB/DOT Orders (1988-1995); Aircraft Accident Reports (1934-1965), Railroad Accident Investigation Reports (1911-1966), US Coast Guard Navigation and Inspection Circulars (1960-2000). Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • TECHNICAL SERVICES • Online Systems Support • DOT Library Integrated Systems (Q Series, EOSI) The system enables users throughout the world to search DOT Library holdings. The fully integrated system allows for efficient library management. • Research and Reference DatabasesA large number of electronic databases are included - many full text. • DOT Library Websites June, 2003

Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • TECHNICAL SERVICES • Acquisitions This section is responsible for ordering all books, periodicals, online databases, and library supplies for DOT Library. Acquisitions also maintains all subscription records for the library and divisions and processes the renewal for these subscriptions. • Journal Routing The library is transitioning to electronic journal access, amid other enhancements.   12. Information Gateway for the Transportation Community • TECHNICAL SERVICES • Cataloging Catalogs all monographs, serials, and electronic resources. Uses MARC, AACR2, LCSH, and the LC Classification scheme via OCLC and the Library’s ILS (Q Series from EOS International). June, 2003

  13. Information Gateway for the Transportation Community NEW DOT HEADQUARTERS BUILDINGS • Anticipated in FY06. • All offices will be shrinking to fit into them, including the DOT Library. That means a collection reconfiguration! • We will be seeking new homes for parts of our present collection, both monographs and journals. • Keep your eye on the TransLib and Fedlib listservs for further news. We will also be contacting individual libraries who we think may have an interest in particular subjects or titles. June, 2003
