  1. EMS, MBMS : The future of CBS CB is evolving. EMS over CBS is already standardized, and MBMS is on the way. Overview on the future developments of CB

EMS, MBMS : The future of CBS • Since the beginning of GSM (but CDMA as well), there is an identified need for text (non-voice) message delivery service • Two services are defined for that purpose: • One for point to point messaging : SMS-PP • One for broadcast messaging : SMS-CB • SMS-PP is a known huge success. It also paved the way for lots of « SMS-CP » applications and VASs • Broadcast comes next because it is the only technical way to address the masses

EMS, MBMS : The future of CBS • EMS, and EMS over CBS • First, Nokia’s Smart messaging improved basic text SMS messaging experience, adding pictures and sounds • Then, EMS was standardized (in « R4 ») to provide interoperability between manufacturers • EMS was greatly enhanced in « R5 », and EMS over CBS was also introduced • Color support, Hyperlinks, return address

EMS, MBMS : The future of CBS • EMS / CBS improves CBS applications, and applies to all CBS business models. • Information for free • Advertising • Operator competitive advantage • Teasing (Push and Pull) • « Pay-per-view » information • Compatibility with old handsets can be achieved by sending text-only versions on a separate channel. • Handsets are expected to hit the market H2-2002

EMS, MBMS : The future of CBS • Will allow the delivery of Multimedia contents • Messages • Streams (audio, video) • Opens the door for « TV on mobile » • Designed to be « VAS friendly » • Again, for Multimedia VASs for the masses, MMS won’t do. Broadcast is required. • The bad news : Specifications are still on very early stage.
