  4. Idrija is located in southwestern part ofSlovenia, at themeetingpointoftheAlpsandKarst.

  5. Municipalityof Idrija coversanareaof 294 sq km. Has 11.904 inhabitants. While the town itself has 5.973 inhabitants.

  6. Oremining in Idrija beganafternativemercurywasdiscovered in 1490. Centuriesofexploitationhaveresulted in mine tunnelsspanning700kilometresandreaching420metresbelowthesurface.

  7. Thetownof Idrija haskept a lifeline to the mine, resulting in a number of buildings in its old town closely linked to mininig being preserved to this very day.

  8. Theareaaroundthetownandthe mine is coveredbywoodland,whichextendshigh to theplateausand used to representanimportantresourceforthe mine`s development.

  9. Anthony`s MainRoadbegan to bedug in theyear 1500. Initiallysupportedbywoodprops, thetunnelwasgiven tube-shapedwallsmadeoflimeblocksandpozzalanamortar in 1766. The 300 – metre tunnelwas used byminersfornearlyhalf a millennium to enter andexitthe mine. Today a part ofthe pit hasbeenarrangedinto a museum. • Thefirstsmeltingplantin Idrija wasbuilt in themiddleofthe 17th century on theleft bank ofthe Idrijca River at Prejnuta. In 1880 thesmeltingplantwasmoved to theright bank, where it operateduntil 1995 andwasthenprotected in 1997 as a monumentoftechnicalheritageand in 2001 as a monumentofnationalimportance.

  10. The Kamšt waterpump is a powerfulandtechnicallysophisticatedpumpingplant, built in 1790 near Joseph`s Shaft. In therusticbrickbuilding is a giantoakpaddlewheelwith a diameterof 13.6 meters, which is famous as thelargestwoodenwheel in Europe. • Gewerkeneggcastle (1533) wasbuilt to housetheadministrationofthemercury mine and as securestoragefacility (warehouse) forpreciousmetalsandcinnaber. Today, it is a magnificicentspaciousbuildingintendedforthe Idrija MunicipalMuseum.

  11. www.cherplan.eu/ • Mine`s Theatrebuilt in 1769 is theoldesttheatrebuildingmadeofstone in Slovenia. Thebuildingtestifies to therichanddiverseculturalheritageof Idrija, whichincludestheatreproduction. • Miner`s house, located at Bazoviška 4. Thehousewasbuilt at theendofthe 18th centuryandwassubsequentlyrefurbished in the 19th century. Thebuildinghas a highgable, threefloors, a basementand a mansard. Thehouse is mademostlyofwood, withtheexceptionofthegroundfloor, which is madeofstone.

  12. ConstructionofFrancis`s Shaft, which is still in usetoday, began in 1792. It is one oftheoldestfacilities in the mine and one ofthe most importantshaftsfor mine operationsandore transport. • The klavže water barriers were built in the narrow channels of the creeks that converge and then flow trough Idrija to serve an important purpose – the floating of wood for use of the Mercury Mine Idrija.

  13. Achacius Square was an important worksite, as well as a place where people gathered. • Town Square. The appearance of the restored square dates form 2006 and is the work of architect Boris Podrecca. • AumetzSquare is one of Idrija`s smallestsquaresand is namedafter a Frenchminingtown, Aumetz.
