  1. ROUTING PROTOCOL IGRP

  2. REVIEW • Purpose of Router • determine best path to destination • pass the frames to the destination • Protocols • routed - used by hosts, can be directed or routed • routing -used by routers, directs routed data to the destination • examples - RIP, IGRP

  3. PATH DETERMINATION • Determine path for data to be delivered to the destination • strip off data link frame to examine packet • reads destination address of packet • Routing Table • contains routes to various networks • contains metrics for each route • default next hop

  4. CONTINUED • Use metrics to compare routes • hop count • bandwidth • delay • cost • load • ticks • reliability

  5. ADDRESSING • Passing frames to the destination through routers • IP address of source and destination maintained • MAC address of next hop is used to reframe data packet • At destination network router destination host MAC address is used to reframe data packet

  6. REVIEW • What is the difference between routed and routing protocols? • What is a metric? • What MAC address is used when passing data between routers? • What address remains constant through the routing process?
