  2. Sunday 4/6 Do Now • Read the setting the stage on page 698. • What did art focus on? Why do you think this was the focus? (Think about how art reflects society)

  3. Revolution of the arts • Romanticism: Reflect deep interest in both nature and in thoughts/emotions/feelings of the individual (shift from reason to emotion and from society to nature) • Seen in art, poetry and music - truth - passion - mystery

  4. Revolution of the arts • Realism: show life as it was, not what it should or could be • Impressionism: show impression of an idea or moment in time (use of light and reflection)

  5. Sunday 4/6 Assignment • Create an piece of artwork. Your artwork can reflect realism, impressionism or romanticism. • Take your time and try your best. You will not be graded on your artwork, but your effort in representing the theme. • Due: Thursday 4/10

Monday 4/7 – shifts in art • To Realism: Industrialization led to hard life for industry workers and dreams that romantics reflected were unrealistic-show importance of working class- use of photography (page 700) • To Impressionists:reaction to realism-show positive side of life – shopkeepers, performers

Tuesday 4/8 – Industrial revolution – Chapter 25.1 Terms • Industrial Revolution: increased output of machine made goods (begin in England in 1700’s) • Enclosures: enclose land with fences/hedges • Crop rotation: crop one plant one year and then plant a different plant in the same spot the following year

  12. Tuesday 4/8 – Industrial revolution – Chapter 25.1 Terms • Industrialization: process of developing machine production • Factors of Production: resources needed to produce goods and services – land, labor, capital (wealth)

Tuesday 4/8 – Industrial revolution – Chapter 25.1 • Agriculture (farming) led the way to the industrial revolution. • Wealthy land owners bought much of England’s land being to create innovations (inventions) to improve farming. • Enclosures became important because farmers tried new agricultural methods and large land owners forced small farmers to become tenant (renters) farmers or move into cities. • Robert Bakewell became well known for his advances in livestock breeding.

Plethora of natural resources - water and coal for power, iron ore to produce machines/buildings, rivers for transportation and harbors for shipping3. What happened in between Britain and U.S. in 1812? -Blockade set up by England (Retaliation against who?)***Engineers, mechanics and toolmakers where not allowed to leave England – keep industrial secrets*** - caused U.S. to become more self-sufficient

  19. Thursday 4/10 – Chapter 25.3 – Revolution Spreads • 1798 – Samuel Slater emigrates to U.S. and builds spinning machine from memory. • Factories erupted and rural women flock to cities in search in higher wages and independence. • Girls watched very closely inside and outside of the factory
