  2. Math 9 STAR • Success • Through • Active • Results • What is success? • What are our options? • What are our goals? • How do we achieve these goals?

Course Outline • The course combines elements of both Grade 9 and 10 curriculum and we will be covering the following concepts • Review of Basic Skills – Operations with Signed Numbers and Fractions, Basic Exponents • Statistics – Measures of Centre and Dispersion, Graphical Displays • Graphing Points and Lines • Solving Linear Equations • Factoring Quadratic Equations • Exponents • Mark Breakdown • Journal Writing – 1 or 2 times per week 20% • Assignments and Quizzes – 3 times per week 20% • Tests – once a week 20% • Projects – at least 2 or 3 during the term 20% • Exam 20% • I am available for extra help at lunchtime (except when I am on duty), before school and after school (by appointment).

Student Information To be passed in on a sheet of looseleaf. • Student Name • Student Number • Student Age as of September 2, 2008 • Date of Birth • Student Home Address and Telephone Number • Name, Work Telephone, Place/Time of Work of Mom, Dad or Guardian • Name of Last Math Course Taken, Name of Last Math Teacher, Mark Earned on Last Math Course

  6. First Journal: September 2 3 Paragraphs of at Least 4 Sentences on each of the following: • Summertime • Feelings About School and Math • Plans After High School

  7. First Project – Math in Current Events • Look through newspapers and magazines for articles of interest that involve numbers, money…etc. • Write a short paragraph about the article, the date it was written and why it interests you • Paste the article and your paragraph on 1 or 2 sheets of construction paper • Put your name on it and pass it in • Do this for at least 5 articles

  8. First Unit – Review of Basic Skills • Operations with Signed Integers • Operations with Fractions

  9. Classroom Policies • Attendance • Tardiness • Respect for each other • Behaviour training lessons Wednesday to Monday
