  3. Leaving the Old World Poland, 1897 You have decided to leave the old world and start a new life. Your father is a poor farmer, and your mother died of cholera when you were young. You will have enough money to board the ship if you can find someone to buy everything you can’t bring to America.

  4. At the Docks A friend has agreed to buy from you anything you can’t bring to America. You now have enough money to get on the boat. Your choice is: go in third class (which costs more) and risk not having enough money in America or go in steerage (which is more crowded and less sanitary) and risk getting sick. Third class Steerage

  5. Leaving Poland This will probably be the worst part of your voyage to America (mentally). You have to say goodbye to your family, your country, and your old life. If things go well you will never see any of these things again.
