  3. Increased Independence Second Graders are working toward: • Unpacking their belongings in homeroom • Taking responsibility for getting homework to school and home • Packing themselves up at home and school • Tying their own shoes…music every day • Planning appropriate clothing choices for the daily schedule

  4. School Arrival Time • Students may enter the classroom at 8:10 a.m. • Students do much better when they are unpacked and settled before 8:25 a.m. • Children who arrive after 8:25 a.m. must sign in through the Manse office before entering the homeroom class.

  5. Dismissal • Children are accompanied by a teacher to the second grade check out area or to the bus group. • Please inform the LS office, in writing, of designated drivers for your child. • If your child is not picked up by 3:30 p.m., they must go to the After School Program and must be registered. Please fill out these forms – just in case!

  6. Absences • Please inform the LS office in the morning if your child is sick. • With advance notice, teachers will work to gather written class assignments or homework for pick up in the Lower School Office at the end of day.

  7. Language Arts Groups • Diagnostic Assessment: (a) reading, writing, spelling skills (b) learning profile We anticipate beginning Language Arts classes during the week of September 16th .

  8. Homework • Math: Given out on Friday, due the following Wednesday • Language Arts: Weekly phonics/spelling rule will be given out on Friday, with spelling quiz scheduled for the following Thursday. Language Arts teachers will individualize specific procedures and expectations by class. • French • Music

  10. Field Trips • Naval Academy Planetarium (winter) • The National Colonial Farm (spring) • Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (spring)

  11. Snack/Lunch • Children are encouraged to relax and enjoy calm conversations with classmates during snack and lunch. • We do not share food. We ask children to return uneaten food vs. throwing it away! • Thermos containers are a great way to keep food warm. We do not have access to a microwave. • We have flatware to share with the children when needed. • We encourage the use of re-usable water bottles. • Bus students are allowed to eat a small snack prior to getting on the bus as they may not eat while on the bus.

  12. Dressing for the Weather • We go outside every day. • We walk all around campus between classes regardless of weather. • Sweater/sweatshirt left at school is welcome. • As long as it is not raining hard, we try to go out for at least some part of recess.

  13. Birthdays • We welcome special class treats to celebrate birthdays. • Please contact your homeroom teacher to arrange the best time for a special class treat and to learn specific food allergies. • Children with food allergies may have an approved special treat provided by their parent, if needed.

  14. Food Allergies • Mahoney homeroom is Severe Allergy • Parker homeroom is Allergy Sensitive • Morgan homeroom is Allergy Sensitive Designated “nut table”, hand-washing before and after eating; table wiped down following snack and/or lunch.
