Questions, Questions, Questions • Exactly what does the law say in regard to academic accommodation? • What is my responsibility in accommodating the needs of students with disabilities? • How will I know if there are persons with a disability needing accommodation in my class? • How do I know that the accommodation requested by the student is appropriate and legitimate? • How can I be sure I am doing what is necessary to provide academic access? • Suppose I don't agree to provide accommodation in the exact way the student is requesting it? • Am I being asked to compromise academic standards or give the student with a disability an advantage?
Do’s and Please Don’t Do’s • DO • Ask Questions if you don’t understand something or how to proceed. • Hold up your end with regard to accommodations which have been determined to be appropriate. • Treat students with disabilities with the same courtesies you would afford other students. • Respect the privacy of students with disabilities. • Assist students in following the College’s policies, such as the requirement that all request for accommodations be registered with Learner Support Services Coordinator. • Please DON’T Do’s • Engage in philosophical debates about “fairness” to other, non disabled students or whether providing accommodations somehow violates your academic freedom. • Decide not to provide the academic adjustments which have been approved. • Leave a student adrift without accommodations. • Refuse to provide copies of handouts, or orally describe information written on the chalkboard, or face the class when referring to something written on the chalkboard, etc., • Refuse to permit students to tape record lectures as an accommodation. • Refuse to provided accommodations until you have personally evaluated a student’s documentation of his or her disability. • Refuse to provide extended time for tests on the mistaken assumption that doing so would require that all students be given additional time. • Make assumptions about a student’s ability to work in a particular field.
