Teen’s & Cell Phones • Texting has become the preferred basic communication between teens and their friends • 75% of 12-17 year-olds now own cell phones • 88% of teen cell phone users are text-messagers • 54% are daily texters • One in three teens sends more than 100 text messages a day, or 3000 texts a month • 59% of girls call friends on their cell phone every day; 42% of boys call friends daily on their cell phone daily

  3. Cell Phones At School • 12% of all students say they can have their phone at school at any time • 62% of all students say they can have their phone in school, just not in class • 24% of teens attend schools that ban all cell phones from school grounds • Still, 65% of cell-owning teens at schools that completely ban phones bring their phones to school every day

  4. Continued • 58% of cell-owning teens at schools that ban phones have sent a text message during class • 64% of teens with cell phones have texted in class; 25% have made or received a call during class time • 76% of girls text about school work, while 64% of boys text about school

  5. Advantages for Phones In Classes • Students can text message missed assignments to classmates that are absent • Accessible to emergency and parental contact • Academic help with cell phone accessories (calculator, internet, cameras, etc.)

  6. Disadvantages for Cell Phones In Classes • Students can use cell phones with text messaging capabilities to cheat on tests • Cell phones can be a distraction in classes • Spread rumours and bullying • Hostility (jealousy, thefts, hierarchy, etc.)

  7. Grade 12 Applied Math Students voted 1. Should cell phones be used in class? YES – 10/15 NO – 5/15 2. Do you use your cell phone in class? YES – 14/15 NO – 1/15 3. Do you use your cell phone in class for homework help? YES – 12/15 NO – 3/15

  8. It Isn’t Always Fair The statistics shown here are not 100% accurate considering not all schools have the same policies and rules, not everyone’s opinions on this topic are the same as well as over the years cell phones are becoming more and more used amongst teens.
