  6. Our History • The Spiritual Companionship Program (SCP) was created as a result of the expressed need and desire for spiritual direction and spiritual direction training. • This need surfaced early in the three-year Archdiocesan Synod in Miami that began in October of 1985.

  7. Our History • A two-year certificate program in Spiritual Direction Formation began in the Fall of 1987. • Nineteen students graduated in May 1989.

  8. Our Evolution • In 1990 a Supervision Year (Practicum) was added to the two-year Program to provide supervision and advanced training. • In September 1999, SCP became a three-year certificate program.

  9. Today • Over 200 men and women, ordained, lay and religious have graduated from SCP. • The course has been offered in Spanish, and we have partnered with the Cenacle in Lantana to make the Program available in Palm Beach County.

  10. Course Description: Year One Broadening Year • Introduction to Spiritual Companionship • Psychology and Human Development • Theology • Discernment • Theological Dimensions in Spirituality Classes combine lecture and texts with course work that is experiential and process oriented.

  11. Course Description: Year Two • Knowledge gained from Year One is deepened by an interior experience of the Divine. • Spiritual interiority is lived and expressed in community. Deepening Year “Retreat in Daily Life”--A contemporary experience of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola given in a small group setting.

  12. Practical: An Integration Year The year offers students an opportunity to practice their spiritual direction or spiritual companionship gifts and skills, receiving feedback and guidance. Advanced Skills Individual supervision of actual spiritual companionship or spiritual direction sessions Participation in peer supervision groups Discussion of Spiritual Companionship/Direction issues as they arise in practice Course Description: Year Three

  13. Our Students • Variety and diversity best describe SCP adult learners. Our students represent a broad spectrum of vocations and educational backgrounds. They come from the far reaches of Dade, Broward and even Palm Beach counties and beyond. • They all come with a desire to learn and to develop their own spiritual life in order to help companion others on their spiritual journey.

  14. How Are Our Graduates Companioning? • One-on-one spiritual direction • Sponsoring members of 12-Step Programs • Bereavement Ministry, Hospice, Nursing • Retreats, Prayer Groups, Bible Studies • And everywhere they go--airplanes, at the office, and even in the line at the grocery store!

  15. Requirements for Admission • Personal commitment to spiritual growth • Desire to help others grow • Personal Interview • Three letters of reference • Submission of completed application form and registration fee

  16. Class Schedule Classes are held each year on Monday evenings from 6:30 until 9:00 PM Mid-September through the first Monday in May at St. Thomas University Main Campus

  17. Tuition and Fees 2001-2002 • Registration Fee $30 • Tuition $300 per semester ($600 per year) • Graduation Fee $30
