  2. I expect… • Strong discussions • Text References to support your opinions • Collaboration and Participation • You to be thoughtfully discussing the day’s reading section until the allotted time is up!

  3. Discussion Director • You are responsible for… • developing at least three discussion questions for each reading day in class (6 questions per week). Make sure these are not Yes or No questions! • helping people talk about the big ideas in the reading and sharing reactions. • making sure that each member of your group shares his/her role.

  4. Things to think about when creating your questions: • What questions do you have when you finish the section? • Did anything in the reading surprise you? • What are one or two of the most important ideas? • Predict: what will happen next?

  5. Super Summarizer • You are responsible for… • providing a brief summary of each chapter that has been assigned. • capturing the main points/details of the reading. • being brief and to the point.

  6. Trait Tracker • You are responsible for… • Identifying character traits of main characters in each chapter. • Identifying direct (explicit) and indirect (implicit) characterization. • Being insightful and supporting characterization with specific examples.

  7. Vocabulary Enricher • You are responsible for… • looking for at least five words per reading day that are puzzling, unfamiliar, or you want to know more about. • recording the word, page number, and paragraph where you found it. • defining the dictionary definition.

  8. Connector • You are responsible for… • finding at least three connections between the book your group is reading and the outside world per reading day. • using examples from your own life, events at school or in the community, history, other books, etc. • RASing your explanations!

  9. Literary Luminary • You are responsible for… • identifying at least four text references that your group will read aloud together. • helping people remember and analyze interesting, powerful, funny, puzzling, or important sections of the text. • determining how these passages will be shared within your group.
