  2. Ecosystem • The community of organisms that live in a particular area along with their non-living surroundings • All the abiotic and biotic factors • Examples: Isle Royale Ecosystem– includes all community members plus pond, lake, fields, air we breath, etc.

  3. Community • All the different populations that live and interact together in an area • Example: Isle Royale Community consists of people, wolves, moose, cats, dogs, birds, worms, insects, frogs, trees, flowers, grass, etc

  4. Population • All members of one species living in the same area • Species-similar individuals that can mate to produce fertile offspring • Example… humans Isle Royale

  5. Biotic vs. Abiotic Factors Living Examples • Plants • Animals • Fungi • Bacteria • Non-Living • Examples • Water • Sunlight • Soil • Air • Temperature

  6. Grasshoppers • Grasshoppers live in the ecosystem. • Their environment is the grass and trees behind the school. • They eat the leaves and try to stay away from the birds.

  7. The Ecosystem Outside of Our School

  8. Bees • Bees live in the ecosystem. • Their environment is the pretty grasses and flowers behind the school. They fly away but they always come back. • They land on the flowers and get pollen.

  9. Birds • Birds live in the ecosystem. • Their environment is the trees. Just like the bees, they fly away but they always come back to the nest they built in the trees. • They eat bugs and grasshoppers.

  10. Deer • Deer live in the ecosystem. • Their environment is the woods behind the school. • They are scared of people and like to hide. Sometimes they cross the busy street to get to the woods on the other side. • They eat grass.
