  2. What is an adventure? How would you turn a day into an adventure? How do you think people feel when they are about to start an adventure?

  3. Read pgs. 10-15

  4. Journal What type of adventure would you like to go on? In your group make a list of things you would need to take on your adventures.

  6. Davy Lowe I am going to read aloud a story about a Canadian gold miner’s unexpected adventure in the 1940s. Day 1

  8. Comprehension • What happens when Davy hits the bear on the nose? • Why does the birch begin to bend? 3. Why does the bear run away?

  9. It’s time for . . . These are words . . . We use them for . . . Vocabulary we want to know Reading, writing, listening, & speaking!

  10. Rock Climbing Vocabulary belay: being tied to a person or a rock with a rope for safety.

  11. descent: a trip down into or from something (such as a mountain)

  12. harness: a set of straps that can attach to a safety rope.

  13. ledge: a shelf of rock

  14. rappel: to come down a cliff by sliding down a rope.

  15. trekked: made a slow and difficult journey on foot. Read pgs. 16 & 17 Meet the Author & Illustrator

  16. I can use illustrations to create reasonable predictions. Predict: Think of a possibility that makes sense based on text clues and personal experiences. Take a look at the pictures of this story and make predictions about what will happen to the boy and his dog

  17. Cause and Effect A cause is the reason that something happens. An effect is something that happens as a result of a particular cause.

  19. Cause (Why does it happen?) Effect (What happens?) Cause-and-Effect Chart(Practice Book pg. 12) Climbers leave Grits on the mountain. Axel and Dag set out to rescue Grits. He thinks Grits might fall from Monkey Ledge. Axel decides to climb up and get Grits in spite of the storm. He reaches monkey ledge safely. Axel climbs carefully, using all the proper equipment. Electricity from the storm fills the air. The hair on Axel’s head and arms stands up. He free climbs the rest of the way down. Partway down the cliff, Axel runs out of rope.

  26. Cause and Effect • One story event often makes another event happen. One event is the cause of another event, which is the effect. • What happens? (effect) • Why does it happen? (cause)

  27. “Stay where you are,” he said. “I’m going for help.” Why does Dag say this? Axel cannot find a handhold and is stranded on the cliff. Dag’s decision is the effect.

  28. Comprehension Strategy:Cause and Effect Using a Multi-Flow Map, choose an important event in the story and give three actual or possible causes and effects of that event.

  29. Base Words • Many words are made by adding beginnings and endings to smaller words called base words. He was climbing very carefully. • In climbing, the ending –ing has been added to the base word climb. T.E. pg. 49C

  30. Find the Base Word! Lighting flashed. Dag counted slowly. Axel picked up the shivering dog.
