  3. Reshaping a goal – “College and Career Ready” • State leadership refocusing the high school exit point • Shared goals of: • Reducing need for remediation • Alignment of expectations • Recognizing education as a continuum • Ensuring a well-educated workforce and citizenry

  4. College and Career Ready in NJ • Leadership of the Department of Education • Task Force • Development of Model Curricula • A new look at Assessment

  5. PARCC and the National Context • Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers • 26 state effort • NJ is a Governing State • K-12 and Higher Education are at the table • Goal to develop new assessments, aligned to Common Core State Standards, that will allow states to implement a well defined standard of college and career readiness

  6. Where we are now • State higher education engagement underway • May 4 meeting at TCNJ for English, math, and Teacher Ed faculty along with a meeting for college presidents • Assessments being developed • Item review teams (k-12 and higher edfacutly) • December 2012 target date for completion of item review

  7. Where are we now • Implementation of the Common Core Standards (K-12) • Identification of challenges ahead with responding to new assessments (higher ed) • Building a transition plan for students currently in the “pipeline”
