  2. ELA March 10, 2014 ELA Needed Materials: paper, pen, insert method sheet Agenda Note: Write a letter to a friend. Finish insert method response. Homework: Read independently. Quick Write: Write 5-8 sentences about the following topic. Write on a piece of paper in your ELA folder. What do you think it takes to work at a fast food restaurant?

  3. Essential Question & Standard How can you transform straightforward prose into a letter to deepen comprehension skills? LA.8.ELACC8W9 - [Performance Standard] - Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

  4. Opening What do you know about writing a letter? What must you include?

  5. Work Session Read the section called Just Add Hot Water pp. 70-76 in chapter 3 McJobs. Imagine you have a job in a McDonald's. Write a letter to a friend describing what you do each shift and how you feel about the pay and conditions. Brainstorm for ideas. Then write your draft on computer, make revisions, proofread, and prepare final. PRINT. You are expected to write 3 paragraphs. Remember— Introduction: Use engaging strategies like questions, factual statements, anecdotes, figurative language, etc. End with your thesis statement. Body Paragraph: Begin with a topic sentence, elaboration (examples, explain, narrate/personal experience, reflect, etc.), and end with a closing sentence. Conclusion: Restate your thesis statement, give advice, question, refer to more on the topic, or other effective endings.

Quick Write: Write at least 5 sentences to respond to the following question. How is the insert method useful when responding to text?

How can you transform straightforward prose into an illustration to deepen comprehension skills? LA.8.ELACC8RI1 - [Performance Standard] - Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

  11. Work Session Finish reading chapter 3 and use Insert Method. After every 2 pages, STOP and respond using the INSERT METHOD.

  12. Work Session continues Brainstorm possible responses to EQ. Then explain how to change prose to a drawing. How can you transform straightforward prose into an illustration to deepen comprehension skills? In chapter 4 The Secret of the Fries read the description of potatoes being made into chips on page 92. Draw a sequence of labeled cartoon-style pictures to illustrate the process.

When you are finished with ALL work, turn in your work to me and then silently read. 

Examples are chronological (time order), sequence (most important to least important or vice versa), cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast, or description.

Use the following words given to you to help you with assignment. When finished with 2 above assignments pick up a vocabulary worksheet for chapter 5-8 (says 6-9). Try to complete it today. When you are finished with everything, you can read silently. 
