  1. Taj Mahal Kouidis Dimitris St’2

  2. Shah Jahan was born in 1592 and died in 1666 (aged 74). He ruled India from 1628 until 1658. Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum located in Agra, India. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal, a Persian princess, who died during the birth of their 14th child.

  3. The Taj Mahal combines elements from Islamic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish and Indian architectural style. The construction began around 1632. The principal mausoleum was completed in 1648 and the surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later. It was constructed using materials from all over India and Asia and over 1,000 elephants were used.

  4. The marble dome that surrounds the tomb is the most spectacular feature. Its height, of around 35 metres, is about the same as the length of the base. The top is decorated with a lotus design. The main finial was originally made of gold. The minarets are more than 40 meters tall.

  5. The exterior decorations are among the finest. Passages from the Qur’an are used. The decorative elements can be calligraphy, abstract forms or vegetative motifs.

  6. The interior walls are about 25 metres high and are decorated with precious and semiprecious gemstones.

  7. The complex is around a large 300-metre square Mughal garden. It has avenues of trees and fountains. In 1983 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
