  1. Report on CSC for ESSC Prepared for CSC by Fred Borcherding FNAL CSC - ESSC Jan'09

  2. CSC Electronics Status • Conducted a Work Shop at Rice U in Houston • January 8th through 11th • Description: • What problems were encountered during running? • Of those, what have been fixed • What the plans to fix the remaining problems • What resources, (people, material, time) are needed to resolve the problems • What improvements should we make (as distinct from fixing problems) • What are the plans? • What resources are needed to make the improvement? • Maintenance Estimate • For each module, how many do we have? • How many spares do we have? • Where are the spares? • What level of engineering effort is needed to maintain the element? • Indico Link > • http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=48204 CSC - ESSC Jan'09

  3. From CSC Q4’08 Report • Short Term detailed Milestones and deliverables. • Resolve issues with the operation and control of the Maraton power supplies • Identify and fix outstanding Canbus issues • Finalize optimal power-on and power-off sequences. • Replace faulty resistors in HV system • Investigate losses of communication between HV system and PVSS • Reduce rate of CRC errors in DAQ system • Develop a loopback test between the TMB and ALCT to allow the testing of the skew-clear cables between the chambers and peripheral crates. • Further analyze the loss of programming of EPROMs • Identify and correct problems with alignment system picomotor control CSC - ESSC Jan'09

  4. LV • Resolve issues with the operation and control of the Maraton power supplies • OPFC • Failure of ON/OFF switch • Quick disconnect in input power circuit fails • With CMS working with Wiener on a fix • Failure upon power on – Soft Start Issues • Turning on too soon after power off greatly increases possibility of failure • Administrative controls have been put into place • Hardware change begun • Lack of remote monitoring and control • With CMS working on modification to add remote • Identify and fix outstanding CANBus issues • CANBus for Maraton system • Expect new server from Wiener • Work to analyze CANBus lines to find and fix any deficiencies • Start now, intensify when LV back on, work until resolved • CANBus for PCMB system > remote ON/OFF at pcrates > uses ELMB’s • Work to analyze CANBus lines to find and fix any deficiencies • Work with ELMB experts to resolve further issues • Start now and work until resolved CSC - ESSC Jan'09

  5. LV cont. • Finalize optimal power-on and power-off sequences. • Observe several issues that have been reduced by a more complex power-on sequence • To proceed further we need to combine slow control of CANBus devices and VME devices • Work will start with availability of cooling and CMS LV in cavern • Work will take about 1 month • Can operate with present power-on procedure while working on enhancements CSC - ESSC Jan'09

  6. HV • Replace faulty resistors in HV system • Work started at ISR • Work will take ~2 technicians ~2 months • Working serially > most of CSC can have HV ON during work • Investigate losses of communication between HV system and PVSS • HV computers located in S1A10 … CSC - ESSC Jan'09

  7. FE • Reduce rate of CRC errors in DAQ system • Rare but disruptive of Global DAQ • Develop a loopback test between the TMB and ALCT to allow the testing of the skew-clear cables between the chambers and peripheral crates. • Present methods are not effective in timing in a small percentage of chamber electronics • Developing a more rigorous testing procedure to bring the lost communication rate down • Further analyze the loss of programming of EPROMs in on-chamber electronics boards • Believed to be partially caused by power-on sequence > see previous slide • Have isolated problem boards for investigation on the bench • Have instituted work around to automatically identify problem situations and rapidly respond with operator intervention CSC - ESSC Jan'09

  8. CSC Electronics Inventory • Following slides list status of electronics inventory for the CSC • For the record … CSC - ESSC Jan'09
