  2. Circulation Desk where you can receive your library card, check out, renew, and return library materials, pay fines, pick up holds, and inquire about general library functions.

  3. Library Catalog A searchable online database, which provides a listing of the materials (such as books, periodicals, films, recordings) owned by a library.

  4. Subject Heading Standardized words or phrases assigned to books, articles, or other materials.

  5. Call Number A combination of letters and numbers assigned to a book that gives it a unique location in the library and is arranged on the shelf near other books on the same subject.

  6. Stacks The area of the library where the circulating collection of books and bound periodicals are shelved.

  7. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) This is a system you can use to request books or articles you cannot get at the Bell Library.

  8. Reference Materials Collection of books, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and almanacs that provide factual information and leads to other information resources.

  9. Periodical A publication issued at regular intervals. Examples of periodicals are journals, magazines and newspapers.

  10. Citation Specific information (for example, author, title, place of publication and year of publication) that describes an information source.

  11. Bibliography A list of citations for books, periodical articles or other materials

  12. Microfiche A sheet of microfilm which can only be read using a special machine, especially in a library

  13. Database A collection of records stored electronically usually accessed through a computer connected to the Internet

  14. Scholarly Journal A periodical devoted to a specific field of scholarly knowledge.

  15. Keyword Search A search using any free associated word or series of words in a chosen field of a database.

  16. Abstract A brief summary of the text of a journal article, book, etc.
