  1. Density What is the definition? How much mass is in a given volume. A measure of how tightly particles are packed into a certain space. What is the formula? Density = Mass ÷ Volume

  2. Density • More dense = more particles, tightly packed • Less dense = less particles, loosely packed

  3. What is mass? Mass is a measure of the amount of particles or matter in an object. SI Unit: Gram (g)

  4. Measurement Instruments • Mass is measured using a balance such as the • Triple beam balance or • Electronic balance

  5. What is Volume? • Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. • SI Unit: cm³ or ml

  6. Measurement Instruments Graduated cylinder Meter stick

  7. 5 cm 7 cm 10 cm Measuring regular shaped solid volume We can measure the volume of regular shaped object using the formula length x width x height. V= L x W x H _____ X _____ X _____ = _____cm³

  8. Measuring Volume of a liquid We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. Make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water when reading. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL

  9. Measuring Volume of irregular shaped objects We can measure the volume of an irregular object using water displacement. Use ml’s Measure the volume beforeyou put the object in. Measure the volume afteryou put the object in. The difference (subtract) between the two measurements equals the volume of the object. Subtract the after minus before How much water did it displace?

  10. Density = Mass ÷ Volume Find the mass of an object, Find the volume of that object. Divide the mass by the volume. Lets practice……….

  11. A chunk of iron has the dimensions of 2 cm x 3 cm x 2 cm. If the mass of this rectangular-shaped object is 96 g, what is the density of iron?

  12. Answer: V= L x W x H V= 2cmx 3cm x 2cm V= 12 cmᵌ D= M/V D= 96 g ÷ 12 cmᵌ D= 8 g/cmᵌ

  13. An irregularly shaped stone was lowered into a graduated cylinder holding a volume of 2 ml. The height of the water rose to 7 ml. If the mass of the stone was 25 g, what was its density?

  14. Answer: V= 7 ml – 2 ml V= 5 ml D=M/V D= 25 g ÷ 5 ml D= 5 g/ml

  15. Five ml of nail polish has a mass of 35 g. What is the density of the nail polish?

  16. Answer: D=M/V D= 35 g ÷ 5 ml D= 7 g/ml

  17. Do liquids have different densities? Of course. . . So what happens when you mix them together? They form layers with the highest density falling to the bottom. Vegetable Oil = .80 g/ml Water = 1 g/ml Dish Soap = 1.06 g/ml Corn Syrup = 1.3 g/ml Honey= 1.4 g/ml

  18. Sink or Float? The density of water is 1 g/mL. Objects float in water if their density is less than 1 g/mL. Objects sink in water if their density is greater than 1 g/mL. Example: Iron D= 5.62 g/mL (sink) Styrofoam D= 0.23 g/mL (float)
