  2. Greetings! I know that I haven’t had the opportunity to introduce myself to most of you, but I look forward to being able to meet with you in the near future. As a brief intro: • My name is Lauren Swihart • I’m a graduate of CSU (B.F.A.) and of Regis University’s teacher licensure program • My experience in education includes roles as a teacher, substitute, and tutor in neighborhood schools and charter schools, low- and high- SES communities, grades PreK-8th, and in the subjects of general education, language arts, ELL, art, and Spanish

Our Reading Classroom Activities • Phonograms • Oral Phonogram Review (OPR) Teacher shows flashcards, students practice saying sounds • Written Phonogram Review (WPR) Teacher gives sounds, students write phonogram • Thursday: Phonogram Test (written) • Spelling • Monday: Pre-test words introduced the previous week; Homework checklist sent home • Monday - Thursday: Introduce 20 new words/week, practice sounding them out, and discuss markings/rules (why they are spelled the way they are) • Friday: Review and test on words introduced the previous week

Our Reading Classroom Activities (cont.) • Guided Reading • Open Court or picture books • Read alouds, partner, and independent reading • Introduce and practice comprehension skills • Assessments: MC, short answer, and essay questions for each story • Read Aloud • Picture or chapter books • Used periodically to practice comprehension skills • Fluency/Comprehension Lessons, Practice Activities, and Assessments These include games, centers, group activities, independent practice, one-on-one instruction, online practice, creative projects, etc.

Homework • Weekly • 20 minutes of reading per night (recorded in reading log which is due the 1st of each month; these can be found on the 3rd Grade website) • Phonograms: please check the AA 3rd Grade website for resources; 3rd graders should automatically know the sounds of all 70 phonograms • Spelling: “Choose Your Homework” • Additional Homework • Will be sent home as needed for additional practice in comprehension, fluency, or vocabulary skills • Projects: Students will have several projects/book reports to complete throughout the year to go with the current reading unit

Website • AA Website -> Third Grade -> Ms. Swihart • Updated periodically • Spelling lists updated weekly • I regularly make small adjustments to routines/instruction to meet the unique needs of my students. Please check back for any changes • Technology and Resources: Look for links/downloads that will be helpful in enhancing your child’s reading education outside the classroom
