  2. Hiroshima and Nagasaki These two Japanese cities will never be the same because they were each destroyed by an atomic bomb, a nuclear weapon, that killed hundreds and hundreds of innocent people and those cities.

  3. Thesis Statement A social issue that is on the mind of society is nuclear warfare or nuclear weapons. In this presentation I will define, tell the history, and the effects of nuclear weapons.

  4. Definition and Explanation • A device used mainly in warfare. • Usually and always full of radioactive elements, so if the explosion doesn’t kill, the poison will kick in. • Two kinds of Nuclear Weapons: • Fission weapon: combination of atoms isotopes to create explosion. • Fusion weapon: Atoms are combined to cause destruction and death.( Root word fuse.)

History • In WWII, the U.S. made and dropped nuclear weapons on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. • In the “Cold War”, the U.S. and Soviet Union raced to have better nuclear weapons than the other country. • It was never a physical battle, but it was a race to be better armed. • Toward recent times, many countries have developed a type of nuclear weapon.

  6. Effects • Leaves damages to the body. • Explosion and heat kill several people.( Since atoms can only be combined and separated in extreme heat.) • Causes genetic defects. • Makes children mentally retarded. • Takes several years(even thousands) to break down and effects an ecosystem and economy. • Makes soil infertile because it gets contaminated with radiation. Thus, it is tough to grow crops.

  7. Effects Cont. • Radiation from weapon causes several ugly diseases like cancer. • Psychological illness • People live in constant fear and lose loved ones.

  8. Conclusion Therefore, nuclear weapons are a device used mainly for wars, has a short to the moment but destructive history, and cause several harmful effects.
