  3. PRE-WRITING • This is what you do before you write! • Think about your topic! • Jot down words, phrases, and ideas!

  4. DRAFTING • Get your thoughts down on paper. • Don’t worry about spelling, punctuation, etc. right now. • Remember you can always change anything you writedown.

  5. REVISING Making changes to improve your writing YOU CAN • Take something out • Put something new in • Change the order • Substitute one word for another

  6. EDITING • Use a dictionary to check your spelling. • Make sure all sentences are complete. • Check your capitalization and punctuation.

  7. PUBLISHING Sharing Your Writing Read aloud Mail it Post it on the bulletin board Let a friend read it Wear it on a tee shirt Ask your teacher to help you find ways to publish

  10. Let’s try it! Step 2: Write a sentence that supports your main idea. Use your prewriting. Step 3: Write another sentence that supports your main idea. Use your prewriting. Step 1: Write your main idea sentence. Step 4: Write another sentence that supports your main idea. Use your prewriting. Step 5: Write another sentence that supports your main idea. Use your prewriting.

  11. Put your paragraph together. This is your rough draft. Sloppy copy. • Share your paragraph with a friend for help with revising. Find a friend with a good imagination. Maybe they can help you think of something you can add to your story.

  12. Rewrite your story, adding more details. Now you need to edit your work. • Find a friend that is really good at editing. Use the editing keys to guide you. Do all sentences begin with a capital letter? Do all sentences end with punctuation? Is it varied? Are there any noticeable spelling errors?

  13. Publish your work! • Your teacher will give you an idea on how you can publish your work. She is a wealth of ideas!
