  2. East India Company • East India Company controls much land in India to get raw materials and sell British goods. • This leads Britain to call India “The Jewel in the crown” because of it’s economic potential.

  3. Sepoy Mutiny • East India Company employs Indian soldiers called Sepoys. They are Hindus and Muslims. • By 1850 there was British control over most of India. • Natives resented racism by British towards them.

  4. Sepoy Mutiny • 1857 – Sepoy soldiers learn that the British grease the cartridges for their guns with pig fat and cow fat. • Sepoys who refused to use the weapons were jailed. • May 10, 1857 – Sepoys rebelled, sparking uprisings in the country.

  5. The British Raj • 1858- British government takes more direct control in India. • Installs Raj, or British rule in India. • British bribed Indian princes and rulers to keep their people under British control.
