  3. Routefinding • The art of working out an efficient route from trail head to summit that is within the abilities of the climbing party. 3

  4. Gather Route Information • Distance/Elevation Gain • Technicality • Trails • Snow Conditions • Weather Forecast • Determine Landmarks 4

  5. Approach Observations • Try to find route from trailhead • Find Landmarks • Look for hazards • Observe the weather • Continually reassess as you’re hiking 5

  6. Think About the Return • Establish turn-around time • Look back periodically to observe return route 6

  7. Trailfinding • Game / Use Trails • Rock Cairns (Ducks) • Blaze Marks • Footsteps in snow • Make sure it’s the right trail 7

  8. Negotiating Difficult Terrain • Brush • Snow • Streams • Unstrap backpack • Take socks off if wading 8

  9. Rocky Terrain • Boulder Fields • Watch for unstable boulders • Scree • Horrible going up • Easy going down • Loose Slopes • Keep group close together • Go one at a time • Yell “Rock!!” if you dislodge a rock towards others 9

  10. Hiking with the Group • Set a pace the entire group can maintain • Don’t split the group up unless agreed upon beforehand • Periodically take rests to regroup 10
