  2. We will explore four “levels” of relationship: Murder 1 John 3:11-12 Hatred 1 John 3:13-15 Indifference 1 John 3:16-17 Christian Compassion 1 John 3:18-24 Anti-Love, Satan’s Level (John 8:44) No Love at all – The World Passive Love – The best we can do God’s Love through us Love 1Jn 3:11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Beginning : Commencement, or the start of Jesus Ministry 1Jn 3:12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. Jealousy – or Envy. Able’s offering was accepted because he was a True believer, worshiping in the manner prescribed by God. Cain on the other hand, was trying to worship God in his own way, not as God has said He was to be worshiped. The result was that Able’s sacrifice was accepted, but Cain’s was not. That led to Jealousy in Cain’s heart because it exposed his unrighteous acts to everyone. Jealousy led to hatred, and hatred in the case of Cain, led to murder.

  3. Cain is not presented as an atheist, but he is presented as a worshiper. The children of the devil masquerade as true believers. They say the right religious words, the sing religious songs, attend religious gatherings, they even bring offerings. These are not valid proofs that a person is born of God. The real test is his love for the brethren. Here, Cain failed. He murdered his brother and then lied about it (Gen 4:9). His envy had turned to anger. Centuries later, the Pharisees did the same thing to Jesus (Mark 15:9-10). Jesus, here too, called them children of the devil (John 8:44). Mat 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Your love and righteous acts expose in the world (and false brethren) their faults and failings. That leads them to jealousy, through which the Spirit convicts them, or they continue on the downward spiral to hatred. 1Jn 3:13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. (John 15:19, John 17:14-16)

  4. The world hates Jesus Christ (John 15:18-25) for the same reason Cain hated Abel: Jesus Christ reveals the world’s sin and its true nature. Once convicted and exposed, then they must either repent or destroy the messenger. Satan is the “prince of this world” and controls it through murder and lies. Like Cain, the people of the world try to cover up their true nature with religious life. In contrast to this, God is love (1 John 4:8) and Truth (John 14:6; 1 John 5:6). 1Jn 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. 1Jn 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Does that mean a murder can’t be saved?? No, just like previously when talking about habitual sin, it means that anyone can be forgiven, but once forgiven, you don’t go on murdering (hating). Paul took a hand in the stoning of Stephen (Acts 7:57-60) and he admitted that his vote helped to put innocent people to death (Acts 26:9-11; 1 Tim 1:12-15) Hatred does the hater far more damage than it does anyone else (Matt 5:21-26)! It actually puts one into a spiritual and emotional prison. The antidote is love.

  5. 1Jn 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. Failure to do evil is not enough. Love involves doing them some good (Isa 1:16-17). Jesus didn’t just talk about His love; He died to prove it (‘while we were yet sinners, Chris died for us’ … Rom 5:6-10). He was not a martyr; He willingly laid down His life (John 10:11-18; 15:13). Self-preservation is the first law of physical life; Self-sacrifice is the first law of spiritual life. 1Jn 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 1Jn 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. Jas 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? Jas 2:15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, Jas 2:16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Jas 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

  6. Three blessings from obedience: 1) Assurance 1 John 3:19-20 2) Answered Prayer 1 John 3:21-22 3) Abiding 1 John 3:23:24 Assurance 1Jn 3:19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. 1Jn 3:20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Satan will try and rob you of this confidence. He always looks for a reason to condemn you (Revelation 12:10) – Your response? The Christians Bar of Soap! Answered Prayer 1Jn 3:21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 1Jn 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. A believer’s relationship to the brethren cannot be divorced from his prayer life. If husbands and wives are not obeying God’s Word, their prayers will be hindered (1 Peter 3:7). Also John 15:7; Psalm 37:4 1Pe 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

  7. Abiding 1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 1Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. The Holy Spirit is here mentioned for the first time (introduced in 2:20) Abiding 1 John 3:24, 4:13 Attesting 1 John 4:1-6 Authenticating 1 John 5:6-8 Summary of this section: Fellowship: Agape the brethren, even to laying down your life False/Deception: Say you have agape, but have indifference (apathy), hatred, murder Solution: True agape leads to blessings – Assurance, Answered Prayer, Abiding

  8. 1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 1Jn 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 1Jn 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Science, Oneness Pentecostals, Unification Church, Scientology, Shepherd Chapel Mat 13:3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; Mat 13:4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Mat 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. Mat 13:31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Mat 13:32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

  9. And many are in pulpits. The birds of Matthew 13 are in the overgrown mustard trees! (Matt 13:4, 19 vs v.32) Jude 4 They have crept in unawares 2 Pet 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 Pet 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 2Pet 2:3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Matt 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Matt 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many... Matt 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. TestEverything,Even Me!!

  10. 1Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 1Jn 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 1Jn 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. For the third time we will be considering the subject of Love, this time from a deeper point of view. - Love for the brethren has been shown as proof of fellowship with God (1 John 2:7-11, light vs. darkness) - Love was then presented as proof of sonship (1 John 3:10-14, life vs. death) Now, in 1 John 4:7-16, we get down to the very foundation of the matter, why love is such a critical part of a life that is real. - Love is the valid test of our fellowship and sonship because God is love. If we are united to God through faith in Christ, we share His nature. Thus, love is the test of the reality of our spiritual life.

  11. 1Jn 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 1Jn 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. Is there a recurring theme here??? I don’t know…. Maybe… John is suggesting that… WE LOVE ONE ANOTHER!! Do you get the idea that the lack of Love was a concern to John in his day? What about our day? Mat 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. Mat 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. Because we have been born into His family, we have received His nature (1 Pet 1:14-16; 2 Pet 1:4). • God is spirit (John 4:24); as to His essence. Beyond the restrictions of the physical world; not limited by time and space... • God is light (1 John 1:5); as a symbol of holiness; darkness is a symbol of sin (John 3:18-21; 1 John 1:5-10). • God is love (1 John 4:8); even His judgments are measured out in love and mercy (Lam 3:22-23).

  12. 1Jn 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 1Jn 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Manifested: ‘phaneroo’ = render apparent (literally), appear, manifestly declare, made public, out in the open In the Old Testament, if you wanted to approach God, it had to be through ceremonies, rituals, sacrifices, etc. But now, God is made manifest to us. God loves you, but He cannot save you by love. He has to do something about the fact of sin. It took the Cross. This what the Book of Romans deals with in Chapters 1-7; God’s predicament, which is solved by God’s greatest gift: His Son. 1Jn 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

  13. 1Jn 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Jesus is the “Faithful and True Witness” (Rev 3:14), The perfect representation of the Father (John 14:9) 1Ti 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. Col 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: Col 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Col 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: In the Old Testament, God didn’t dwell IN man. God dwelt WITH man, in Eden, in the Tabernacle, in the First Temple, then Jesus. Now, in us!! “Know ye not that your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit?” (1 Cor 6:19)

  14. 1Jn 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 1Jn 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 1Jn 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. Warren Wiersbe notes that three different witnesses are suggested: - The witnessof the believer that Jesus Christ is God’s Son (verse 15) - The witnessinthe believer by the Spirit (verse13) - The witnessthroughthe believer that God is love and that He sent His Son to die for the world (verse 14) 1Jn 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. “God is love” is not simply a conceptual statement: it is the basis for the believer’s relationship with God and with his fellow man

  15. Summary “Love one another” is both a commandment (1 John 4:7) and a privilege (1 John 4:11). It is also a thrilling consequence and evidence of our abiding in Christ (1 John 12). The better we know God’s love, the easier it will be to live as a Christian. Bible knowledge alone is insufficient, and in fact, a dangerous substitute if we are not careful. Unless we love the lost, our verbal witness to them will be useless and often counter productive. We are to return love for the world’s hatred and slander (Matt 5:11, 44). Up until now we have been focusing on Christians loving one another. But now we turn to a deeper, more important topic: the believer’s love for the Father. The Father loves His children in the same way He loves Christ (John 17:23, 26). The Christian life is to be a daily experience of growing in the love of God. There are four evidences suggested by which a believer can know that his love for the Father is being perfected: (from Wiersbe’s Commentary) Confidence (4:17-19), Honesty (4:20-21), Joyful Obedience (5:1-3), Victory (5:4-5)

  16. Confidence 1Jn 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 1Jn 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. “Boldness” here can mean “confidence” or “freedom of speech.” It does not mean brazenness or brashness. A believer has a reverential fear of God, not a tormenting fear; he is a son who respects his Father, not a prisoner who cringes before a judge Heb 9:27 It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. A believer in Christ does not have to fear the past, present or future. For the Christian, judgment is not future, it is past; we have been judged already on the Cross. Honesty 1Jn 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us. 1Jn 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 1Jn 4:21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
