  5. Requires 24 Credits Including the following: 4 English 3 Math 3 Social Studies 3 Science 1 PE 0.5 Health 0.5 Personal Finance 0.5 Practical Art 1 Performing Art US & MO Constitution Graduation Requirements

How Many Credits Does Your Student Have? • Look at your child’s last report card or transcript for cumulative credits and cumulative GPA • Copy of TRANSCRIPT will be given to each senior when they meet individually with their counselor • Check required courses • SAVE to use when filling out applications

  7. Requirements: Must attend FZ for a minimum of one year. Must take a minimum of a six hour day for four years resulting in 24 credits. GPA will include all courses taken in high school except correspondence. Recognition: 4.2 and above = Summa Cum Laude (Gold medallion) 4.0 – 4.19 = Magna Cum Laude (Silver medallion) 3.80 – 3.99 = Cum Laude (Bronze medallion) Cum Laude Honors System

University of Missouri-St. Louis Missouri Baptist St. Louis University Must have cum GPA of 3.0 or higher (to take for college credit) College reps. will provide information in classrooms on August 22 and 26 UMSL, SLU, & MO Baptist registration forms are due September 10 to the guidance office or completed online Enrollment for College Credit Classes in High School

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses • AP Language and Composition • AP Literature and Composition • AP World History • AP Calculus • AP Statistics • AP Computer Programming • AP Biology • AP Chemistry • AP Government & Politics • Information on AP exams will be available in March. • Optional exams are given in May.

  15. III. How Does My Child Choose a College?

  16. Anyone Can Go To College • Need a high school diploma or GED • Need ACT

  17. ACT/SAT • ACT flyers with 2014-15 dates and registration packets are available in the guidance office. Online registration is encouraged. • The next test dates are September 13th and October 25th. The cost is $38.00 or $54.50 if you take the writing portion. • Deadline for registration for the September test is August 22rd. • Required to upload a photo for ID purposes when registering for ACT.

  18. ACT Prep: FZW 6-Week Class • Offered at West High School to prepare for October test date • Class starts in September, specific dates will be posted on parent portal and website • Cost is $95 • Registration forms will be available in the guidance office

  19. ACT Prep: ZAPS 2-Day Class • Also offered at West High through ZAPS, condensed course • Classes are Oct. 15 - 16 from 2:45 – 5:15 • Cost is $79.99 • Information is mailed to all seniors & in guidance office

  20. Where Do I Find College/Career Literature? In the • Career Center Adjacent to the Guidance Office • Open before school, lunch, or after school • Make an appt. with your counselor • Local library • Internet Web Sites

  24. Where Do I Get College Applications? • Apply on college websites • In the CareerCenter

  25. Online Applications • Let your counselor know when you have applied online by completing the orange on-line transcript request form in the guidance office. • If applying by means of the Common Application, you must also check with specific university’s website for supplemental application.

  26. Recommendation Letters • Some admission or scholarship applications may require a recommendation letter • Ask, “Are you willing to write a letter for me?” • Give adequate time to complete the letter (at least one week) • Give pertinent information to be included in letter

  27. Application Deadlines • Normally should have applications to colleges of you choice before Thanksgiving • Counselor needs to have one week before date you want it mailed (for proofing) • We will mail completed “paper” application with the student’s transcript

  28. Transcript Release Form • For transcripts to be released to colleges and/or the NCAA, we must have a signed release form on file • Parent must sign if students are under the age of 18 • NOtranscript can be sent without this form • PLEASE Complete Tonight & Turn In

  29. Transferring High School/College Credit Classes to College • Student must request an official college transcript from the college (after Senior year is completed) • Send to the college or university you plan to attend

  31. College Costs • Varies • From $50,000 per year at Washington University • To $2,500 per year at community college

  32. Scholarships Based On… • Academics (GPA, Class Rank, and/or ACT) • Athletics • Activities or Talents • Community/School Involvement • Need (Family Income)

  33. What Scholarships Are Available? • Many scholarships are offered by the individual colleges or universities. • There are also national and locally sponsored scholarships available. • Most local scholarships applications are available second semester.

  36. FAFSA[Free Application for Federal Student Aid] • Available in the Guidance Office in mid-December • Workshop in February to assist parents on how to complete form

  37. How to qualify for a “Full Ride” to SCC • Complete all of the requirements for the A+ Program • Students may apply for full Trustees Scholarships. • There are three types of scholarships with a limited number of each.

  38. A+ Program Benefits • The state pays for A+ scholarships to community colleges and state vocational technical schools. • In addition, several 4-year state colleges and universities are giving A+ scholarships. • Call the A+ Office for information.

  39. A+ ProgramRequirements • Seniors must sign up by September 10. • Students must graduate with a 95% attendance rate, earn a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher, and complete 50 hours of tutoring. • All tutoring hours and A+ paperwork must be completed by May 1, 2015.

  40. A+ Tutoring • Seniors who need to complete tutoring hours should stop by the A+ Office ASAP. • Seniors who are in a work program or will be doing early release next semester may tutor during school hours in the afternoon.

  41. Grow Your Own Teacher Program • Identify students who are interested in pursuing careers in teaching in high need areas High need areas include: • Special Education • Industrial Technology • High School Science • High School Math • High School Foreign Language • ELL

Grow Your Own Teacher Program--Benefits • Seniors may currently apply for financial assistance in the form of a forgivable loan in the amount of $3,000 per semester for up to eight (8) semesters total • Components of the program include seminars, work experience, mentor support, job placement, and possible financial assistance • Application Deadline is October 1 • Applications are available in the guidance office
