  2. How do we define the personality traits of a hero? Sports heroes have many traits that make them considered heroic. Achieving the highest of athletic abilities, having the ability to accomplish greatness in what you do, and even having good sportsmanship can make an athlete a hero. (Strudler) Athletes have the strengths, discipline and characteristics to overcome problems, and do what is right for them selves and others around them. (Brown)

  3. How do the setting, conflicts, and antagonists influence the development of literary heroes? Characters are developed by exploring new places. They learn from their enemies, and become stronger from what they go through. (Hinze) Throughout a story, strengths and weaknesses of a character are shown. (Zimmitti)

  4. How does a hero reflect his/her particular culture and society? A heroes culture is reflected based on their traits. (Despeaux) When athletes compete, they bring their culture and lifestyle to events. (Vitello)

  5. How does a hero represent his/her time period and geographical area? Heroes lifestyle and appearance are represented by their backgrounds. (Ammann) The things a hero does, and why they chose to do so are developed by their time period and geographical area. (Dowling)

  6. How do various cultures reward or recognize their heroes? Athletes gain personal satisfaction from achievement as well as rewards from society like respect. (Hatch) Heroes gain different achievements from what they have accomplished from society but they are always recognized for the good they have done. (Egamberdiyeva)

  7. How did Lance become so good at cycling? Lance has so much body power, his lungs and heart are very strong, and he trains very hard and always works at improving. (Lovgren) Lance has the mental ability to overcome challenges and not let anything get to the best of him. When he falls down, literally and figuratively, he’s always able to get right back up and keep pushing at his goals. (Laberge)

  8. At what point in his career was Lance diagnosed with cancer? By 1995 Lance was winning big races and setting records. He continued to do so until October,1996, when he was diagnosed with cancer. (Holt) "I hate losing at anything, whether it be cards, golf or whatever." –Lance Armstrong

  9. What type of cancer did Lance have? Lance was diagnosed with stage three nonseminomatous testicular cancer. This type generally has a high cure rate when found early, but Lance, being healthy, did not notice the symptoms until it was very late. By this point the cancer spread allover his upper body. (Holt) "Cancer is my secret because none of my rivals has been that close to death and it makes you look at the world in a different light and that is a huge advantage." –Lance Armstrong

  10. How long did it take for lance to overcome his cancer? Lance was diagnosed with cancer in Oct. 1996. By 1997 he was told he cancer free. (Holt) Lance overcame it because he had the right attitude towards it: “Anything is possible. You can be told that you have a 90-percent chance or a 50-percent chance or a 1-percent chance, but you have to believe, and you have to fight.” –Lance Armstrong

  11. What does Lance do now that he got over his cancer? After overcoming cancer, Lance returned to cycling and won 7 Tour de France victories from 1999 to 2005. (Holt) Lance puts much time and money into a cancer research foundation. He now has retired from cycling and puts all of his time into his Livestrong foundation that has raised more than $325 million in cancer research. (Reston)
