  4. GALS – FOR YOUR GUY

  5. “FELLOWSHIP MATTERS”(1 John 1:3-4)

  6. 1 John 1:3-4 (NASB) 3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowshipwith us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 These things we write, so that (y)our joymay be made complete.

  7. 1 JOHN 1:5-7 (nasb) 5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowshipwith Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowshipwith one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

  8. FELLOWSHIP? • GREEK WORD = KOINONIA (κοινωνία) • “Speaks of a sharing, a communion, a common bond and life. It speaks of a living, breathing, sharing, loving relationship with another person.” • “God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:9)

  9. “Christian fellowship is two-dimensional, and it has to be vertical before it can be horizontal. We must know the reality of fellowship with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ before we can know the reality of fellowship with each other in our common relationship to God (1 John 1:3). The person who is not in fellowship with the Father and the Son is no Christian at all, and so cannot share with Christians the realities of their fellowship.” • --Your Father Loves You by James I. Packer, Harold Shaw Publishers, 1986.

  10. FELLOWSHP IS AN INVITATION INTO A joyful RELATIONSHIP • WITH THE FATHER (1:3, 5) • WITH THE SON (1:3, 6) • WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT (Gal. 5:22-23; Eph. 5:17-21) • WITH ONE ANOTHER (1:3, 7)

  11. Why a joyful FELLOWSHIP? • Bear one another’s burdens • Pray for one another • Encourage one another • Grow together in Christ • Love one another as Christ loves us • Fulfill the Great Commandment and the Great Commission

  12. OUR joyful FELLOWSHIP • To remind each other “who and whose we are” = brothers & sisters in Christ • To remind us that the temporal trials we face will have a joyful end • To encourage spiritual growth and be equipped to do the work of ministry • To worship God together (for His glory and our good)

  13. OUR joyful FELLOWSHIP? • To remind us of our living hope • “Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations” (Psalm 90:1, ESV). • To be obedient to Christ • “Some people have gotten out of the habit of meeting for worship, but we must not do that. We should keep on encouraging each other, especially since you know that the day of the Lord’s coming is getting closer” (Hebrew 10:25, CEV).

  14. John 17:20-21 (NIV) 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

  15. JOHN 17:22-23 (NIV) 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

  16. “There is a brotherhood within the body of believers, and the Lord Jesus Christ is the common denominator. Friendship and fellowship are the legal tender among believers.” --J. Vernon McGee, Thru the Bible Radio

  17. The apostle paul 10 My goal is to know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death, 11 assuming that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead” (Philippians 3:10-11, CSB).

  18. “There are many elements that go into the total concept of fellowship, as it is described in the New Testament, but the sharing together in suffering is one of the most profitable. It probably unites our hearts together in Christ more than any other aspect of fellowship.” ~Jerry Bridges, True Fellowship: The Biblical Practice of Koinonia, 1985.
