The X-ray film is replaced by sensitive crystal detectors, and the signals emitted by amplifiers when the detectors are struck by rays are stored and analyzed mathematically in a computer. The computer is programmed to rapidly reconstruct an image of the examined cross-section by solving a large number of equations including a corresponding number of unknowns.
