  2. There have been two periods in history where the understanding of the universe has been revolutionized in a single lifetime.

  3. Galileo • Tycho Brahe, • Johannes Kepler, • Isaac Newton

  4. Today • Sputnik to Cassini

  5. We live on an ordinary planet, orbiting an average star, which is one star in a typical galaxy.

  6. “Principle of Mediocrity”

  7. Everything about our Earth and solar system is ordinary in every way.

  8. This principle is actually necessaryto a study and understanding of our Universe.

  9. The universe is the totality of all space, time, matter, and energy.

  10. A typical galaxy is some 100,000 light years across.

  11. A light year is the distance light travels in one year.

  12. Constellations are groups of stars that appear close together in the sky.

  13. However, the stars aren’t actually close together, but in roughly the same direction in the sky as seen from Earth.

  14. Constellations had varying names in different cultures • North America - big dipper • W. Europe - the wagon, the plough • Greeks - great bear • Egyptians - leg of ox • Siberians - stag • Native Americans - seven brothers,ermine, funeral procession
