  2. Windows • An graphic user interface (GUI) designed to make the computer easier to use • First announced by Microsoft in the early 1980s • Many concepts used in Windows were borrowed from the Apple Macintosh interface which itself was heavily predicated on work at Xerox Parc

  3. Windows • Windows 95 - Introduced Aug. of 1995 • Made Windows easier to use • Combined OS with new GUI • Windows 98 - Introduced June of 1998 • Enhances the previous versiont to make Windows even easier to use • Folds many features of the World Wide Web into Windows

  4. Starting/Exiting Windows • Starting • Turn on machine • Windows automatically loads • Stopping • Always exit properly - temporary files are opened that have to be properly closed • Start, Shut Down…, Shut down the computer?, Yes • Wait for message to turn off computer

  5. Windows Terminology - p. 2 • Desktop - Workspace on the screen for opening windows and applications • Object - any image that appears on the desktop • Icon - a graphic representation of an object • Properties - control how an object behaves and operates in a Windows environment
