  1. Changing Idaho Idaho’s location at the intersection of the Louisiana Purchase, the Oregon Country, and the Mexican Cession made the story of boundaries and territory relationships a complicated one. Do you see where Idaho was within the Oregon Country?

  2. Washington Territory In 1861, President Lincoln signed the bill creating the new Washington Territory. This new territory included all of the present day states of Idaho and Washington, as well as parts of current Montana and Wyoming.

  3. Idaho Territory In 1863 President Lincoln established the Idaho Territory. This Territory reduced the size of Washington Territory and included parts of present day Wyoming and Montana.

  4. A different map of the original Idaho Territory in 1863

  5. Montana Territory The Territory of Montana was established in 1864 taking property from the Territories of Dakota and Idaho. Montana is one of the few western states whose original territory boundary is the same as its later state boundary.

  6. Final boundary of the Idaho Territory (1880) Not long before Idaho became a state (in 1890), the Idaho Territory Boundary changed again with the creation of the Wyoming Territory. At this time, the new transportation resources of the Transcontinental Railroad and all its spur lines greatly accelerated the expansion of the west.
